Now, The story.
I've always enjoyed the build threads on here.
My story begins with writing off my 07' Forester XT while dodging a kangaroo in January this year.
Long story short, I bought the car back from my insurance company and sold everything I could in a effort to fund another car/build.
I had a daily driver so I didn't have to be in another Subaru straight away, I had time to carefully pick/wait for the right car to come up.
Time went by, I looked everyday hoping my carsales search would find a winner. I had my money ready to go and inspected some cars: 3 GD STI's and a GC8 WRX. None of them did anything for me and after owning nothing but subaru hatches and wagons for the last what feels like a million years, I had to be in another wagon.
After speaking with a good mate of mine, Ben (Ichiben or MCM's Mechanical Stig as some of you may know him as). I talked about my want for a Gen3 wagon again. I love the shape of the gen3. I didn't want a TT powered Legacy and I didn't want a WRX/STI converted one. I've converted a B4 to single once, I won't do that again. I've also had my share of single turbo subaru's and I'll be honest, I'm bored with them.
What am I left with? Not much really.
In Japan they got a 6 cylinder version in both sedan and wagon forms, Called the RS30 (Sedan) and GT30 (Wagon).
They are powered by a EZ30. I'm a massive EZ series fan. I love working on them, I love listening to the distinct whine of the engine at idle and most of all I love the sound they make from idle to redline under 100% load. These use these things in some small aeroplanes, They rule.
So what do you do when the car you want doesn't come out in your country but a toned down version does? You build the car you want.
My main goal with this car was for any aftermarket parts to look like they belong. I wanted to keep it classy yet agressive at the same time.
The conversion begins with a 2000 Liberty GX Wagon. It needed to have rego, straight panels and a clean title. It had all of these, Sold!
Next step was sourcing a front cut, As always Ichiban Imports was up to that task.
It was a RS30 cut, 58,000km's young. Awesome.
This wasn't just going to be a GT30 copy, It was going to be "my" version of a GT30...It had to be manual and after heaps of research I had all my favourite bits picked out and for the right price.
Legacy Bumpers and panels were sourced, GTB Interior, Manual conversion parts/rear end, Service parts, Replacement parts and various other bits and bobs from all ends of the globe.
This car was being stripped down to a bare shell. If it was coming apart, It was improved, replaced, cleaned or all of the above in some cases.
It's all fun and games to think of your ideal car with a unlimited budget and what you could do. This is the real world though, I did have a budget. This is a bang for buck build. I've modified plenty of these cars over the years, I've found the best bang for buck parts that actually do improve things and give you results. So those bits you see listed, They work.
Next step, The build.
After the car was running ok, It was sent to a gentleman named Taylor for a open door respray in my favourite subaru colour code. 06-07 01G Premium Silver.
Fresh!...No skirts or spoiler fitted.
It was painted and looking fantastic.
The next step, Engine management.
In Aus and pretty much anywhere in the world, Nobody will touch this ECU. Nobody.
I had read from start to finish a build from the USA where the owner of a H6 Gen3 Outback had supercharged his car and was in need of engine management. He ended up using a man named Ed from Xtreme Racing Tuning. They got this supercharged outback running and making some damn good power after heaps of issues and making definition files from scratch.
Ed is based in Barbados. It was so weird sending money via paypal to somebody you have never met before for a service you have no faith in being successful...He sure proved me wrong.
So I took a punt, Sent a email to Ed @ XRT and looked into a wiring fix to sort out my engine light issues (Caused by the manual conversion, These ecu's only come out auto)
I learnt heaps about tuning on this build. I've always wanted to know how it all works and the process of doing it properly. It's mind melting. I have a new found respect for tuners. It's hard work.
Ed finally got back to me. I gave him the run down of the build and all details.
I downloaded a app on my phone so we could speak 24/7 and send files back and forth. After much frustration, Arguments, Fights with Ben and many many days, I had a definition file! This def file had all auto related codes deleted. I had a functioning engine light and it was all running properly. Success!
Ed had done it! and the support from him was amazing. Worth every penny and grey hair I grew in the process.
Since I've had the car on the road, The car has been tuned and feels good. No detonation and a much smoother power band.
It's on the road, It drives and looks amazing. Perfect.
So that's just about it for my car. I've tried to keep it short and sweet with lots of pics.
The amount of sleepless nights I've had making decisions or stressing about it are crazy. It's so refreshing seeing something you have built up in your head over and over, Just about every second of every day for 3 months finally come together.
It's everything I want. It's my car. Every little bit has been my decision...And the sound. The sound is amazing in person.
Massive thanks to Ben. This car wouldn't exist without him. He put in so much hard work, Putting up with my stupid questions, My ever changing mind and for all the spare time he gave up to make this thing happen. This is his car as much as it is mine.
More thanks to all of those who helped me making decisions, Forum members who picked up parts for me and Businesses that gave me epic deals.
I'm sure I'll add more info and pics in the future. Until then, Time for some epic drives and enjoying this thing every time I turn the key.
