Hi there

Anyone able to confirm my diagnosis or give me pointers?

MY06 2.0 manual Impreza behaves strangely under heavy throttle. Happens in any gear, at any speed, at any time of the day.

Putting around town has no issues but when you put your foot down (read: trying to get up a hill) it starts to seriously struggle. Revs hesitate, then surge.

I'm thinking spark plugs? Sound like the first thing to replace?

Took this video which might help.

I would be giving it a good service
Plugs, uec and fuel filter if it needs doing.

Does it rev out fine? will it reach redline

My impreza used to do the same. After replacing coil, plugs, leads. Fuel filter i replaced the fuel pump and the problem has never come back

But i'd try spark plugs first cause they are cheaper and easier

Cheers guys. Will give that a go.

I'm guessing SOHC?

It will eventually reach red line.

2.0R should be DOHC.
Start by checking the coilpacks for cracks followed by spark plugs.

Check it for codes to see if it's logged any misfire ones history or pending.

Ah yeah will check codes tonight.

Coilpack seems ok. Removed leads on the nodes and there wasn't any visible corrosion.

If sohc, it might be the spark plug tube seals, letting oil down onto the s plug.

Also check the leads - one may have gone open circuit

high impedance. Busted core. It'll still spark - but intermittently. Check for evidence of tracking around the boots and coilpacks.

Does this cause misfire? I used to get a huge amount of oil collecting in the plug holes on my SOHC, but only ever had issues with old/failing leads. That wasted spark coil could pack a punch through a brick wall.

Yeah mine doesn't do that, but as i explained in the last central coast meet, ive been getting the engine light popping up and it disables the cruise control. Sometimes it doesn't come on and other times it does. Getting it checked up tomorrow.

Sister has been working nights and I work days. Keep missing each other.

I'm 99% sure a plug, lead and coilpack change will fix her up. Just gotta find time!

Mate of mine has one of these. Doesn't have this issue but 2 sparkplugs are full of oil. Maybe a fault by subaru? So maybe be valve cover gaskets? And oil causing the issue mate.
