Any ideas on drive/steering problem?

10 September 2012 - 08:58 PM

To precede all posts, I'm in the Philippines, in what has been called "The Last Frontier". The Subaru dealer is an hours flight away (no road connection, and normal "rules" do NOT apply :-)

Please help on this problem if you can!

All is well, driving (with a little spirit) along a not too rough unmade road with bends.

Suddenly, graunch! and steering wheel pulls to the right, so I stop.

Cannot see any obvious reason, so drive slowly (3kms) to main road and some hard standing.

Jack up right front and wheel is resistant to turning.

Borrow friends jack, and jack up left front - wheel turns freely.

My thoughts are 1. CV joint stuffed, 2. Wheel bearing.

Call out Filipino local mechanic (20 kms away) who arrives quite soon.

He looks at the problem and diagnoses wheel bearing problem, and searches for a socket to release the bearing.

I go for a cold beer.

Then, and this is the crux of my problem, the mechanic calls me and says "Problem fixed". I try the right wheel and it turns freely. "What was the problem? I ask" ...... reply "Sir, the pin was not aligned."

In my relief, I didn't ask him to show me which "pin" :-(

Since then the car drives perfectly.

Any ideas?
