Boost control solenoid testing?

18 January 2019 - 02:46 PM

Hey, I am just starting to go over all my vac lines and solenoids and realize that on my car when I have it in diagnostic solenoid cycling mode the BCS does not cycle, it just stays closed. Is this normal or is it maybe stuck? My boost has always been on the low side on the primary turbo I think.

Also, my silicone vac hose finally arrived and it is not 3.5mm internal as stated, more like 2.5mm. Should I use it or not?

Cheers

Random Coolant pipes?

17 December 2018 - 07:49 PM

Hey all. I am in the midst of cleaning up my engine bay and doing all the vac lines on my 2 Gen Legacy. I have pulled the cooler off and found two coolant hard lines that come all the way from the radiator to the back of the engine bay and then are looped back together with some obviously dodgy kinked bit of hose. So what I would like to know it what are they supposed to be for?  It looks like the heater hoses are still there and go from the manifold to the fire wall and I can't see any obvious spots on the manifold or intercooler for where these small water pipes are meant to go. Anyway check the pics and I'd be keen to know if anyone knows what they are for.

Vac line replacement.

12 December 2018 - 04:18 PM

Hi guys. Among other things, over Christmas I have been planning to replace my vac lines in the engine bay and the BBoD. After having a look in the engine bay it looks like the manifold may have to come off to get a some lines. Is this correct? I'm OK with removing the intercooler but am not keen on removing the manifold, given it runs well already. My other option is to just clean all the lines out from each end and clean all the solenoids out with SUEC. Given mine is a 95 I expect everything will be pretty brittle down there and don't want to cause damage by fixing what is not broken, but I have read that replacing all the lines is really beneficial. So what do you reckon?

VH20 instead of VH13?

28 September 2018 - 08:43 PM

Hey all, I have just got my Leggy (2Gen, 96 model, with EJ20H, VH13 primary and waste gate on secondary turbo) back on the road after a mini resto and the primary turbo is still noisy. I believe it has a bad bearing and is non rebuildable. From what I can read though on VH13's they are also known as a RHF4 turbo, for which the car came with a rebuild kit. Do they come in BB and journal bearing versions?

Anyway, I can get a new VH13 off ebay from Kinugawa, but have found a remanufactured VH20 which is still off a 2Gen for a lot less and from what I read is a better turbo. From reading on here it will physically fit but is this going to upset the running of my car? I believe my ecu cannot be tuned and I don't really want to spend the money on it anyway.

So- stock replacement, or upgrade to VH20?

Gen2 95 legacy noisy primary turbo.

24 August 2018 - 03:29 PM

Hey guys. My recently bought 95 legacy has a what I would call a "whiney" primary turbo. It works fine but I think the bearing is on its way out. I have heard of these being noisy in the past and not being an issue, but should I be worried about it? I don't want to send shrapnel into the rest of the engine if it does go.

I believe it's a VF13 as my car is an early model with a wastegate on the secondary and the year model. I have seen a few on line, but does anyone know of a source in Australia? Or if i even should be worried?

Cheers
