A British man died after tying himself naked to a tree with a rope wrapped around his penis, an inquest has been told.

Kevin Kirkland, 44, succumbed to hypothermia and blood loss after cutting himself while apparently trying to escape from the knotted rope near his home in Shropshire last December.

The Telford Magistrates Court heard Mr Kirkland, a bondage enthusiast, had tied himself to the tree by his wrists and genitals after fashioning a rope into makeshift handcuffs.

But he became fatally trapped when a knot jammed around his wrists.

The court heard the computer engineer was still alive when he was found by walkers Mark Griffiths and Elaine Batho a few hours later.

"I heard a few grunts and groans … I called to him, 'Are you okay, what's going on?'" Mr Griffiths told the inquest.

"There was quite a lot of dried blood on his arms. He had marks on the back of his head and he was quite dirty.

Mr Griffiths said he wrapped his coat around Mr Kirkland to "give him some dignity" before police arrived and freed him.

Mr Kirkland was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later.

The court recorded a verdict of accidental death.
