Morgan, not sure I follow? Are you saying bicycles are nothing more than fashion items?

/cheap shot

My plan which we hatched a while ago, was to actually have the registration number on the back of a cyclists helmet - as this would not be a piece of metal, just a sticker, and wouldn't infringe on the 'aesthetics' of the bicycle. The cost of the sticker and the code algorithm would be fully funded by the state.

The two main reasons I think bicycle registration are important;

a) Identification in event of accident/fault or not at fault incidents/ traffic infringements

B) So that FULLY STATE FUNDED cyclist education programs will be undertaken by cyclists before they are allowed to ride on the road - people that ONLY use bike paths (should have to but I'm realistic) and bicycle parkways through reserves would be exempt from having to obtain some sort of certificate/licence.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can argue this. Bicycle related injuries have doubled in nearly every state in the last five years, you can fob this off as the result of poor driving from motor car drivers, but can you really, honestly say that a decent percentage of these numbers are not to do with lack of education for cyclists?

What I am proposing is FREE and beneficial.

Terms of use on insurance is purely a legal matter, and that, you cannot argue with. Insurance is mandatory for ROAD USERS. This I won't go further into, unless you can change my mind.

Yea I can see your point there, Nik. This would also encourage cyclists to use helmets.

Would you be against adding cyclist rego/insurance costs to your car rego/insurance costs? Possibly more for insurance as your rego scheme is govt. funded.
Say a tick box on your insurance policy questioning if you are a cyclist? This may increase the premuim by what? $30-50? But if you are in an at-fault accident with a motor vehicle, you are covered.

I'm guessing if the cyclist doesn't take any responsibility and there are no witnesses, the car owner will have to cover damages. Same as in a regular car accident.
If the driver gets the cyclists details I'm sure the insurance company can sue or something...

Mick (Moose on here) was telling me once he was backing out of his driveway and some kid on a bike ploughed straight into his car. Mother of said child went off at Mick for hitting the kid, etc, etc, etc. Stupid kid just wasn't watching where he was going. From memory he had to pay for his own car to get fixed and the mother possibly tried to get the medical bill out of him too. Don't quote me on that...

An owl and a squirrel are sitting in a tree, watching a farmer go by. The owl turns to the squirrel and says nothing, because owls can't talk.
The owl then eats the squirrel because it's a bird of prey.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

But in your scenario, the cyclist has stopped and offered information. Even a vehicle that does not stop can be identified by plates.

I remember that story, I wonder if it's searchable?

Insurance wise, I think that is a logical step, to include your cycling as a part of the cover. It just seems like a logical progression. You want to be safe on the road in case something bad happens while you're driving a car, why being safe while you're on the road riding a bike is different is just incomprehensible to me.

As for increasing price on registration, or having it as an inclusion +$10/$20, I would agree. Because as I said before people under legal driving age would be impossible to fully Police - but - L platers are not allowed on the freeway - why should underage cyclists be allowed on the highway? This gives you a finite point at which a licensing obligation is placed on a pedal powered road user.

But that's not hugely my gripe, as even though I'm a Liberal, I understand that arguing cyclist should have to PAY to use the roads would be a difficult task. My registration requirement comes back to the fact that I believe they should be identifiable, and, they should be made to undergo even the most basic of cycling education.

Lol that's an interesting law.

Sure, it's annoying when an L plater doing 80 holds up all the traffic but I'm glad I got the freeway experience on my L's rather than getting my P's and having to do it for the first time by myself...

The day I got my L plates, I did 3.5 hrs of driving in 3 different cars (two being manual) all around the Central Coast, on both bitument and dirt, single, double and tripple lane roads including the freeway. Good times :)

I spent 5 mins in a manual on my L's before cracking it and learning with auto, now many years later, I wouldn't give up a manual for anything....except maybe stop/start city driving

As soon as she hands it to you, slowly take of your pants, then, while staring her straight in the eyes rub it against the tip of you penis, while continuing your painfully intense gaze whisper to her;

I should just convert to single, right?
