What, so you're saying the average joe who commutes back and forth to work each day, averaging about 5km/h is going to stress his tyres?

Its more probable that he'll spill his coffee in his lap and crash or spend to much time brushing his farken teeth, then it his tyres are going to cause and accident.
Korean tyres cost less, because the pay the shmuch 45c a day. It has no bearing on the quality. You lot just seem to think that cost = value. "I paid a fortune so it must be good". Nice logic jack-ass...

The comparison made was a $60 tyre to a $220 tyre. If you're really going to argue that then it's going to be a long Saturday.

It is far more probable that a crappy tyre will induce under/oversteer in any kind of snap emergency situation.

By your logic driving slowly to work every single day on cheap tyres is safe as houses. Nice logic j... you see where I'm going with this.

No fuckhead thats not what I'm not saying that at all, and I've never said "cost = quality"... TBH my re001 that cost $205 ea IMO are one of the best around although their not the most expensive

"Modern tyres have done more than any other automotive component to improve the capability of the platforms that ride upon them. No matter how impressive the hardware is – those extra kilowatts, those even more powerful brake systems – it’s tyres that translate the potential into actual performance. It’s a big job, too, and often taken for granted. This is one of the reasons why the sadly burgeoning trade in cheapie retreads for performance tyre carcasses often sees young blokes on a budget go rapidly from ‘fully sick’ to profoundly injured, in an ambulance."

It’s simple enough to join the dots separating that last paragraph from the list of premium tyres tested this year. All the premium tyre makers were invited to participate, and some declined. If there’s one finding we’ve reported in the five previous Wheels tyre tests, it’s that there are small differences in performance between premium tyres, and a major gulf back to the discount bottom-feeders. In effect, we’ve been spruiking one key message for six years – buy premium tyres, not cheapies. Me? I’d be asking myself how smart it would be to buy something that a manufacturer wasn’t prepared to see put through its paces against its key competitors, in tightly controlled objective tests.

Nice one Buzz. But, I have a question. When they do these tyre tests, do they allow the tyres to scrub in before they are punished? I noticed with my Sumitomo HTRZIIs (very happy with them) that they were like a dog on wet lino until they got some use and heat cycled a few times, then the grip started to come. I also remember with new tyres on the bike I also had to be very very careful (brown undies a few times). Hey Dylan, maybe we need a tyre forum :P

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

My younger brother did one of these rally days earlier this year and said it was the best ever, started in an old RWD Escort rally car then got into an Impreza, he wants to go back and do it again after Christmas

Nice one Buzz.

Probably not.

the test conclusion...

Never forget that premium tyres are a form of insurance. Pay maybe $30 more per corner and you could avoid a traumatic brain injury – surely one of the better insurance deals around.

With that in mind, it’s almost impossible to go wrong when you shop for tyres. If everyone went into their local tyre retailer and selected only from a ‘premium’ list, without being distracted by the discount specials from Eastern Europe, India or China (and checked the pressures once a fortnight) the roads would be safer. Here’s the list (in alphabetical order): BF Goodrich, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Falken, Goodyear, Michelin, Sumitomo, Toyo, Pirelli, Yokohama.

It’s that simple.

In a sense, what we’re doing here is splitting hairs. There’s a little less than five percent separating the six 235/45R17 contenders, and just over three percent separating the 195/60R15s. A big deal in racing; less so on the road. It means they’re all good tyres, and infinitely better than any cheapies or retreads.
