I know I'll get crucified for saying this, but sometimes dealing with a large reputable dealership is a bit easier. Otherwise use your NRMA guy to check it out and do your searches before buying. I've found in the past if you say you'd like 'your mechanic' to look it over that usually separates the liars from the honest ones.

It's a scam. Car is written off and the owners (and his family) attempted to intimidate me into keeping the car. Not gonna happen with me. 'ing con artists. Guaranteed it was stolen in the past and the missing pieces were replaced with more stolen parts. Next time I go for a check up I'll definitely be taking an NRMA bloke. Heard that they were great from external sources as well. Thanks for the heads up.

New, used, big dealer, private sale....it's all a gamble when you are dealing with something as complex as a motor car.
Plus, for most people a car represnts a sizable finacial out lay so they get annoyed when their $2.50 Daewoo doesn't perform like a Rolls Royce.

I've been speaking with an alarming number of people who have bought new diesel Captivas from Holden and are having no end of trouble with them.
Serves them right.

Something will come up eventually. Good to see you getting checks done, Had a foz xt get traded in by a panel beater recently...The car had been in a serious accident very recently and repaired very quickly for sale. It looked mint from a salesmans point of view. Got it up in the air...Different story. Ended up getting thrown away to a local wrecker. (After i had my way with it)

I have friends who are of whom you speak like that, and they treat me better than my family treat me. Not to say that my family treat me badly, but they're the warmest, friendliest and most accommodating of people who would feed you before they fed themselves.

There are good and bad in every way, shape and form, nationality, religion, and region.

Just be careful of how you speak about to whom, and don't follow media stereotypes.
