The National Transportation Safety Board apologised after a volunteer intern issued the "inaccurate and offensive names" to KTVU Channel 2, a Fox affiliate in Oakland, California, which then aired the wrong information.
During the lunchtime broadcast on Friday, co-anchor Tori Campbell told viewers the names of the pilots were "Sum Ting Wong," "Wi Tu Lo," "Ho Lee Fuk," and "Bang Ding Ow", while a graphic displayed the names next to a photo of the charred cabin.
She said the newsroom was "working to determine exactly what roles each of them played during the landing".
The station and the NTSB issued grovelling apologies for the on-air blunder.
