Grinding coffee fresh for the macchinetta makes a big difference. And you're correct, don't use max heat and pull it off the stove as soon as you hear that it's about to boil/bubble.
I grind enough for the week, and keep it in an air tight jar in the fridge. Its not the best, but I don't always have time to pull the grinder out everyday. I do definitely notice a difference when I grind fresh. but for everyday the stuff thats pre ground is passable.

yeah its the dark place thing rather than the cold. Fridge is probably the most consistently dark place for me to keep it.
