Another White Gen2 joining all the others.

After looking for a suitable car to upgrade to from the Gen1 for the last few months I stumbled upon this on gumtree for a very cheap price. Since I didn't have much time before it sold to someone else, the inspecting of the car was done in semi-darkness but nothing seemed out of the ordinary so we put a deposit in and picked it up the next night.

Manual, AWD, 297,000kms, Unequal headers, Outback bumper, Dual sunroof, Aircon needs fixing, Power steering pump was covering the engine in ATF and the car was filthy.

As soon as I got the car it was time to clean. The car looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months and every panel required a good scrub then cut and polish. We discovered it had been resprayed at one stage recently which is probably why the body looks so good. The interior also needed a huge clean as the previous owner liked to eat food and drop it down between the seats. I also replaced the shifter with the original as the momo that was on there wasn't in the best condition.

Before

Removed seats and cleaned up both amp's wiring

Clean, just needs floor mats

Once the interior was all clean we started fixing small problems as we discovered them. First one was stripping the HID ballasts and some other weird things done to the car. Another problem we found out was that the sub didn't work. Tested the wiring using a spare speaker and everything seemed in the right place. We took the sub apart and discovered someone has fiddled with it and put the wires on incorrectly, as soon as this was fixed the sub worked great. I just wish it was a little smaller.

The mess of wires surrounding the battery, it has been cleaned up but I forgot to take a picture.

I had to stop work for a little while it was raining and discovered there was a leak somewhere in the rear of the car. The broken aerial seems to be the problem so we siliconed it up for now and will check again when it rains next. Then it was time for some proper pictures

That's all we've done for now. I'll be leaning how to drive manual in the next few weeks before HVC and then it'll just be a waiting game till I get green P's in August.

Cool.

That fuse near the amp should be relocated near the battery.

Thanks guys, will be putting the Gen1 up for sale soon so i'll have some funds eventually

That fuse near the amp should be relocated near the battery.

There's already a fuse near the battery. I think the previous owner put the extra one there as a splitter, should I still replace it?

Nice one.

Looks like the fuse near the amp is redundant. Can be removed completely :)

Awesome upgrade mate, and the interior came up real nice after a clean.

The leak in the roof could also be caused by the sunroof. There is a tube going from the sunroof to the rear of your car, down the pillar and finally out towards the bottom of the car. When that gets clogged with crap, water cannot escape and banks up causing it to leak inside.

Wanting to buy/looking for: single genuine STi rim, genuine STi front lip, Corazon or Zero/Sports grille and another OEM grille

Can you hook a brother up? Please contact me now. I have cash ready.

Will have to check it out @ HVC15.

Turns out the front sunroof is at the end of it's life. Took it off after a fair bit of struggle and it's covered in rust everywhere. I'll have to find one to replace it asap.

Thanks, We've already had a look if the pipes are blocked and so far it seems they look fine. We'll be taking the head lining off eventually to check if any of the pipes have shrunk and fallen off.

I can't wait to learn how to drive manual, It'll be at HVC for sure

Have been trying to do as much as I can to the car but the rain has stopped most of the work we wanted to do. Got a new sunroof which was in much better shape than the previous one. Thanks Brian for pointing me towards Nathan  :D We painted it in rust converter just to make sure it doesn't rust and put it on. Also found that the broken aerial was the reason of the leaky roof but also checked the sunroof tubes just in case. Nothing was blocked or loose and the aerial was easy to pull apart then silicone up.

Has a bit of sun one weekend so it was time to give the engine some time as it seemed to have a missfire under load. New oil, coolant and re-gapped sparkplugs were put added and the misfire dissappeared. The powersteering pump looks to be leaking from somewhere so i'll have to buy a kit to rebuild it soon but for now it's working fine.

One more area that needed looking at desperatly was the shifter bushings and linkages. The shifter had heaps of sideways play even when it was in gear and was making it hard to figure out which gear it was in.

We pulled the right one out of the car...

17365009985_e4e3103f5d_b.jpg

The bushings on the old pivot were non-existent so that was replaced with a brand new one. The shifter is much more solid now and it's not as easy to shift into the wrong gear now.

Still need to do some painting on the front and rear bumper before HVC and if it's possible find some bilstein shocks as the current one's are very noisy and hard.

I have to replace that part as well. Not looking forward trying to get tools up there.

Looking good tho, loving the color coded outback bumper.

It's an interesting look the outback front bar on a "regular" liberty setup. I do like the colour coding that's been done too.

Enjoy the learning curve of driving a manual!

Cheers

Update time before HVC

Gave the car a clay bar over the weekend as it was in desperate need of a good clean, also did some cleaning up of the interior. Floor mats arrived not long ago and are now in the car along with a new sony headunit to replace the crappy fold out one. Swapped the number plate from the sedan to this one, much nicer I think.

Painting the bumpers was next on the agenda so grabbed two cans of pre-made subaru white and a can of subaru primer from sca. Turned out to be almost exactly the same colour so we did as much as we could. Came out just as I had hoped for from a can job, it's nice not having any black bumper exposed anymore.

18149279011_322ed9871d_b.jpg

That's about it done to the car so far but I was able to get something today which was a very good bargin. I passed through Pick and Payless as I was already in paramatta today to grab a few small things for the wagon. As I was walking towards the Subaru section, which is at the back of the lot I noticed something at the end of one the first rows that looked familiar. It was a white gen2 wagon that had just been brought into the yard and hadn't even been entered into the website yet. Everything looked stock apart from one thing, it had projectors. So $38 each they were mine, all they need is a clean up and the lens polished. Then I can start trying to wire them up

18149288601_f51429ddb3_b.jpg

Came up well after some cleaning, just need to polish. Probably wont be fitted for HVC unless I magically find some time to put them in.
