Sucks, but if those pistons are good you'll have a solid engine again!

Just a heads up... new heads from a donor engine will be cheaper than getting your fixed..
and they are dime a dozen at the wreckers.. thats what i would be doing
If the repairs quote turns out to be much more that the wreckers cost I'll do that. Only problem is that the wreckers in Sydney probably wants $105 for each side which would then need to be skimmed and tested
Yep, only phase one EJ22s are non interference. I think it has something to do with the change from hydraulic lifters in the phase 1 to solid lifters in the phase 2. There could be a design change to the piston in the phase 2 as well due to the higher compression ratio, but this could be due to several things such as valve open/close durations etc.
Sucks, but if those pistons are good you'll have a solid engine again!
Cheers
Bennie
Helps to know that for the future. Thanks Ben
Here's a picture of the impact point on the pistons, I don't think it's serious but would help to get others opinions. Only damage is on the drivers side pistons

Car's all back together and running. Decided to do a major service while everything was apart and we had a chance to inspect the engine. Apart from being covered in dirt/grease the block was fine. I purchased a VRS kit with timing belt/pullys and a water pump as well. While everything was easy to reach I cleaned as much of the engine bay as possible and also fixed up some broken mounts.
Once everything was together we properly bleed the coolant system, checked the oil and took it for a drive to get all the crap out of the exhaust pipes. Blew abit of smoke on the first startup and drive but once it all got up to temp it had all cleared up.

Awesome score on those Projector headlights mate. Been looking online for some and haven't been able to find any cheaper than $100 each.

As some of you might've seen I bought Matt's old set of HKS coilovers to replace the very worn and dirty struts currently in the car. I knew they wouldn't bolt up in the rears so tried my best to find a pair or rear top hats that would fit both the coilovers and my car. Didn't find much at all and the stuff I did find was more than I paid for the coils themselves. I had the thought of making up a set ourselves but Dad wasn't too keen on running diy rear top hats. After convincing him that was the only way to go he sourced a 6mm aluminium flat bar and I started creating the template.
The finished products next to the originals
All fitted up, ready to be put into the car
And installed
All setup to a height that seems about right, might go abit higher in the rears if anything
Also picked up a full RX wagon bodykit to put on the car eventually. All the bits need a fair bit of work and paint before it's ready to be put onto the car.
As you can see from bottom of the picture above, the person who took the bumper off for me had no idea what so ever on what he was doing. Should have it all fixed up, good as new hopefully.

Thanks Scotty, yeah they're still in well working order even after sitting so long with Matt. I don't drive too much apart from school in Manly so that's probably why hahaCar looks good Tim, how do the hypermax's go? They used to be in my old RS that Matt bought, don't see you around the area much

About time I update this.
The car hit a big milestone so picture was required
I got my green P's around the end of August so I've finally been able to drive the car myself and see if there is anything that needs fixing. I was told the steering rack felt worn by the alignment place so ordered a set and got them installed. This cleared up most of the play in the steering and now feels much better. I also raised the rear coilovers up as my mechanic said it was just a little too low.
There's a problem that I've only just noticed is happening and I know it wasn't doing it before. I'm not sure if it's just this colder weather or that I didn't notice it earlier but the thermo fans have not been working at all recently. One side was initially not working so I replaced it with one from the wreckers but once it was out and tested it still worked. After a drive now both fans didn't work. I researched a bit into this and remembered about the green plugs under the dash and plugged them together.
I've gotten confused from this part. When the green plugs are connected the fans all work just as normal, going through all the speeds and each relay feels to be working. Some people say that the coolant temp sensor is broken but my temp gauge is still working fine. I'll go to repco and see how much a new one is from them but if not I'll grab one from eBay.
Does anyone have any other ideas where I should start trying to fix this problem?

You want the one that has 2 or 3 wires going to it not just the single one.
Not saying that's the problem but I'd say there's a good chance that's the problem
