Hi everyone,

My 1996 gen 2 liberty gx started making this noise today (see the youtube video linked) and I can't work out what it is exactly. It's like a rattly whir that goes with the revs and sounds like its coming from the back of the motor? If anyone has heard it before or has any ideas of what to check to determine what it is please let me know!

Cheers,

Zac

sure its the rear?  Sounds a bit like an alternator pulley bearing or similar.

Pull your accessory belt off to check.

Hey,

Thanks for the suggestion. Pulled off the accessory belts and sound was still there unchanged. Thinking it could be a bearing under the timing belt cover so that's probably the next point of call. She's at 171,000 kms anyway so maybe she'll get an early belt and pulleys change.

Cheers for the advice and if anyone else has 2c to add I'm all ears!

Suggest you attack the problem with a mechanics stethoscope (length of hardwood or similar -- like a broomhandle). Press it against various parts of the block and bits (water pump, for example) to see if you can pinpoint the location a little better before pulling it apart.
