Also, on that note re: TIG welding flanges, welding them without a foot pedal is a nightmare. It's one of the many advantages of one - or using pulse. Amps up for the flange, back down for the pipe, up flange, down pipe, etc. A foot pedal means you can control it as you're going. Otherwise, it's a pain in the dick because of how SS holds heat. Makes it great for an exhaust but a dick to weld. Haha.

To be honest the biggest issue i had was more just getting a good position. I could get a nice puddle going and then id only get 50mm of travel done

Unfortunately my tig doesnt support a adjustable pedal or pulse. Only a cheapie at the end of the day. When i did my dump flange and i could have the flange bolted to to the turbine housing and horizontal it was a much easier process

After 2 test drives and 2 more bleeds finally got all the air out. Brakes are back to feeling good and actually biting.

Hopefully my coilovers arrive soon and thats the next job

If you're looking to get rid of the pink springs, I'd be keen.

Once i get the teins in and make sure theyre all good the setup will be for sale. Not interested in separating the shocks and springs if youre just after the springs though

What sorta specs are on the STi cams Nick? Curious if they'll make any noticeable differences compared to stock ones.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it. In process of being stripped and sold off.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon. Scrapped.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. Scrapped.

MY13 BRG, current daily, very nice to drive, small mods to make it even nicer again.

Very good question. Cant find much info on them

Some stuff says bugeye wrx cams are 240/240~
The STi cams are 242/246~

No idea on the validity, wouldnt surprise me if theyre the same either but Im working on the principle that V3/4 STi cams are better than WRX and applying it lol

Possibility of getting the stock cams checked to see what they are when you do the swap down the line? Very curious.

Cheers,
Ben

Good score on the cams. Bugger that it’s so painful to fit them! Engine out I’m guessing?

Neat addition to the interior too. Way better than the “woodgrain” trim I’m looking at in the Gen3 RX - but it’s alright for me as a daily km eater to and from work (on 490,000km on original engine atm).

Cheers

Could do them with the engine in if you really wanted to but theyll go in eventually when i do the headgaskets.

Perfect time for it as the cam tolerances will get redone as ill convert to solid buckets

Coilovers finally arrived last Wednesday. Got around to installing them on Sunday. They are absolutely minty. Was able to adjust the height with my hands like a brand new set. First test drive on full soft and they are absolute pillows.

Bet you weren't expecting this now were you?

After deciding it was a good idea to hit someone's Mazda 3 in the ass and write off my wagon id spend 2-3 years rebuilding i was left with some time to think.

Obviously I wanted another car and im not done fiddling with Subarus just yet. Another wagon of course but I didnt feel the need for another gen 2, coupled with the fact that RX shells are very thin on the ground, especially in good condition and in not shit colours. I decided it was time to move up/down/sideways and into a gen 3.

Originally the plan was to get a nice one cut up in japan, source a local shell, and do the swap. Due to reasons Import Monster were unable to provide the service for 3-4 months (at least) and I didnt really want to wait that long.

A few days before this news a Legacy popped up in QLD for sale, that truth be told ticked all the boxes

  • White
  • Rev D-E
  • Manual
  • Legacy
  • Not forked
  • Personal Import

So with nothing happening on the import front and money burning a hole in my wallet I sent the seller a message...

2 weeks later we have this

p0uc6pW.png

Noice. Its not 100% perfect.

  • Scuff on the rear bumper
  • Spats and skirts need painting
  • Drivers seat is forked
  • Single turbo conversion but still running the TT ecu and tune  nea.gif
  • Its in QLD (being looked after by Shaz)
  • NSW has forked it and I have to get it trucked down

Other than that it should do nicely.

My plans are basically the same as my gen 2. Nice compfy street car that can be driven in the twistys without falling over, and as much turbo succ as possible.

Ive already started buying a few things for it without even having possession of the car lol.

Busy sunday getting stuff sorted for the next trip in 2.5 weeks

Took advantage of whatever black friday is and bought some fluids. The usual HPR10 and oil filter and some Pentire Progear 75W-90 for the 6 speed. Quite rare for that to have any kind of discount and at $80 a bottle 20% off is a deal.

hlfVE9t.png

Also took the time to properly adjust the front coilovers as the tires are rubbing the guards and i obviously dont want that

  • Coilover out
  • Disassemble and remove the spring
  • Put it back together without the spring
  • Install back in the car and jack up the wheel until the bump stop engages, ideally before the tyre touches anything. Weirdly this was pretty much perfect already but unfortunately the drivers side bump stop is absolutely destroyed
  • If needs be adjust the lower shock mount till the bump stop engages without the tyre touching anything.
  • Take it out, reassemble with the spring etc
  • Put it back in the car
  • Car back on the ground to check ride height
  • Back in the air to adjust the ride height by compressing the spring which shortens the shock travel to match the desired travel
  • Back on the ground to check ride height
  • Back in the air to adjust ride height
  • Repeat to infinity

Fiddly job that needs to happen again to replace that wasted bump stop. Will replace the strut top pillowballs while im in there as theyre a bit loose for my liking. Didnt take many pictures cos im lazy but

Finaly ride height
QykrEwG.png

Also finally had the aircon re-gassed and it is sharp.

Local Tein distro wanted way too much money (nearly $300) for 2 pillow balls and 2 bump stops so the pillowballs can wait until they start actually making noise and a generic KYB bump stop from Repco with some trimming will sort out the trashed one.
jEoXpXv.png
Which is whats happened.

Car is aligned now, rolled the guards and set the travel so nothing will rub unless it absolutely hammers the bumpstop and even that its just guard liner so no big deal/ Reconnected my cruise which i cut the ECU speed signal chasing a speedo gremlin but hasnt come back after re-seating all the gearboox loom plugs in the engine bay

Aircon works mint

Ready for an alps trip next week :)
