Chris, as far as differences between a-c and d-e motors, there probably is not much if anything of the long motor thats different. There will be some major differences in sensors etc though, if the turbo motors are anything to go by. Different oxy sensors, different injectors, fuel rails, etc.
You could get a later model engine, and do what I did and remove all the bolt on stuff (manifolds, sensors, etc) and just switch them over. Something to be wary of will be the cam gear and crank pulley - they might have different pickup points for the sensors (like the B4 motors I had issues with). Its surprisingly easy to do too.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

Run the engine with the radiator cap off. If its a leaking head gasket, you'll get bubbles in the coolant. Otherwise its just another oil leak.

If it's the rear main, I'd suggest giving it a go yourself, I found a walkthrough on rslc for removing the gearbox that I used, pretty easy, just awkward. If you have acres to a hoist or proper tools it's not too hard. Otherwise I'd suggest waiting til you do the clutch cos a mechanic will charge a fair bit, which I think isn't worth it for a seal ;)

Not my mechanic, free access to a hoist n tools at will plus will give me a hand for nothing! He owes my old man n bro for fitting out a whole lot of 3 phase through his workshop 4 nothing so free pink slips, labour n workshop use for whenever I need to!

dont be fooled if its not overheating, i just had my gaskets replaced during the week, he showed me what the old head gaskets looked like and they were ROOTED, and i never had overheating before it got changed just alot of leaking, very unresponsive and that putrid burnt coolant smell each time i drove it... now that i got it fixed she runs beautiful again

Ok I'm kinda over the colour of my CS9s.

The question is what colour 2 do them in? I was thinking the same colour as Mostis BBS rims.
