will the gen1 headers bolt straight up to my gen2?

If it is 2.5L then no.

For my 2.5 I used a set of oem gc8 wrx headers. Gave out an awesome sound. This will only work on gen2 dohc 2.5's though as they have a similar exhaust setup to the turbo cars.

What model gen2 have you got?

If it's a 2.2 L motor (GX, or LX) - yes. If you have an RX (2.5L) then no, the gen2 2.5L exhaust system is quite different to any of the other NA exhaust systems.

Aek will these headers fit my obk? If not are you aware of which ones will? Cheers mate

They should do yes, should be the same exhaust run as the gen1.

Very very interesting. I've always wondered if turbo headers would bolt straight up - good to hear from someone who has done it. I think the Gen2 2.5L exhaust setup is pretty stupid for a NA motor.

Cam, don't use aftermarket headers as alot of them (like the ones you linked to) also use an aftermarket uppipe and the bolt patterns are different. Just need to use genuine headers as they bolt straight up to the up pipe bit on the gen2. I remember that I couldn't find any at the wreckers so I just bought a set of some dude on rexnet. Think I only paid about 60-70 bucks. (I reckon 400 would be a waste of hard earned dosh). The only problem is the gc8 headers do not have a threaded bung for the o2 sensor. You will need to get a new bung welded to the uppipe bit.

Agree Dylan, it is a bit of a silly exhaust, makes me wonder whether the engineers were rushing the design of the dohc motor so just used the turbo crossmember and altered the exhaust to suit.

I've got a spare set or two of g1 headers in my little parts collection, if i get time this week i'll swap them onto my impreza and see what i get :)

But from what i can remember my impreza sounds better now then my liberty did with the same muffler, and pipe size.

Yeah do that. just heat wrapped, unless you feel like paying around $300 for ceramic coating, I'm fairly sure that's how much my mates were on his STI

What is heat wrapping? Where do you get it done? Can you do it yourself? Approx cost?

Cheers

Not sure of the benefits of heat wrapping the headers on a N/A.

When I fitted my Borla replicas the performance gain was minimal so I can't see much in heat wrapping.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Isnt the heat wrapping there to stop the excess heat radiating out to the cars more delicate bits...(reat something earlier about a boot vracking or somesuch due to the heat?)...as above what sort of price are we looking at for heat wrapping and is it diyable?

To reduce radiant heat, yes.

My LH rack boot is a little melted but I'll make a small heat shield for that....one day.

You can buy heat wrap tape (it's like a bandage) from race shops or maybe Bursons/Repco etc.
You simply bandage up the pipes and finish the loose ends with wire.

Yeah it's DIY'able. Very.

Just a matter of soaking the roll in water, and applying it wet. You can attach the loose ends with wire, metal cable ties, or a hose clamp. Wear gloves too. Picking fibreglass out of your hands is not only bad for your health (possible carcinogenic), but it bloody hurts your hands for days.

A roll will set you back northward of $60-70 a roll.

I don't see the need of it for an NA however, as you're not seeing under bonnet temps like you would a tuned NA or a turbo.

The flipside of this stuff is that it can be a little dicey to use. It's a fire hazard, in that if oil drops onto it, not only does it stink for days on end, it creates a medium for an underbonnet fire.

But what would I know... I'm a nurse.

I believe people heat wrap NA headers to reduce the tinny sound they make as their constructed of poor quality thin material.
