You get used to the tinny sound.

Use a small muffler and a straight through centre pipe to compensate. :P

Funny you mention that Alex.
My old XC uses this stuff on the choke riser pipe to maintain heat and is mounted near the trans dipstick (used to be auto).
One day I noticed smoke from under the bonnet and this stuff was on fire. The trans fluid had come up the tube and spilled onto the riser and ignited!

Only a small fire. Lucky.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

It also ages quite badly, I have some on my my headers, and none left on my up pipe/dump pipes as they got caught on driveshafts and removed themselves, it starts to get really loose as it ages I think, because it wasn't this bad when I got the car. So keep an eye on it! I'll be ceramic coating my headers in my mini, as I'm assuming it speeds up rusting too. Food for thought.

It's also a royal PITA when degreasing your engine.

Sh1t smokes/stinks for days afterwards.

Ceramic coating isn't cheap. I did my up/down pipes, and cost me over $300. But it's great.

What's it like on reducing radiant heat?

I really should have done before/after laser temperature gun readings...

Alas I didn't.

Radiant heat significantly reduced... Before... I couldn't get within a couple of feet of the turbo (which is also ceramic coated).

After lashings of 17psi on a 28 degree ambient sunny day.. I could put my hand about 30-40mm away from the turbo before it was uncomfortably warm.

Say I get the headers off eBay, they arrive and I'm about to install them, would I be better off putting them on without heat wrapping and test if they sound tinny, or heat wrap them before I put them on?
Or should I not worry too much about heat wrapping?..

Thanks guys for the valuable info..

I reckon that anyone that puts headers on an NA Subaru need their head read.
But if you feel that you need that boxer rumble out of an NA don't forget to wrap them in alfoil.
And also don't disregard that 0.2KW power increase.
As Tony Montana would say:
In this country, you gotta make the money first.
Then when you get the money, you get the power.
Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

It's all us NA drivers have, is to look and sound fast, but disregard anything else better that the money could be spent on.

It may be just me, but it feels as if the car is happier trundling along at low revs.
Pity the dyno I use is only 2wd as I would love to do some back to back testing.

They cost me the same as a couple of decent bottles of red so meh, why the feck not I say!

I want to change my headers to UEL purely for sound. I don't think that I'm going to get even the slightest improvement in power, and will accept the fact may it be true that putting UEL on my car might decrease power. I'm only after the sound.
Remember, I'm not allowed to drive a turbo vehicle until I get off my green p's.
