How would you know the difference if you've always had a TMIC?

Now now Soop - Don't criticise the circumstances side of things. I know for all intents and purposes, the FMIC WILL perform better. However, that only takes into consideration the mechanical advantages. It does not take circumstances into it. The damage I sustained totaled in excess of 10 grand, and yes, it did damage the radiator. However, if there was a cooler sitting in front of it, I wouldn't have been able to drive away, let alone drive it for the couple of weeks while waiting for insurance to come through. All that was required was topping it up every few days.

If I was living elsewhere, I'd have a FMIC. But, because of where I live, I don't. Why, after so many debates over many many threads, is this still coming up? Essentially, its personal choice. If you are after facts, there does happen to be a search button, which works remarkably well I've found.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

You managed 10k worth of damage and you still drove the car?

um, I some how don't believe that. Not unless some panel beater seen you coming a mile off.

The only thing straight that was left in the front end was the RHF guard, chassis rails and strut towers. If the insurance had their values right, it would have been a write off. I can post pics if you want. Good as new now, in fact, I'd argue better.

because its the internet.

dude i've been in plenty of fmic cars, who cares really? its whatever the driver wants. go experience it for yourself that is the best way to find out what you want, not what someone says...

yes its rexnet, but who gives a stuff these are PROVEN results. equal if not better results with less work and cheaper? tough decision there.

Mmm yes. Because Dyno's accurately replicate proper driving conditions....
Dyno results also prove ****. So really unless you can get me 1/4 mile times and MPH for each of those cars. It means nothing.

Cmon fellas, chill out.

No need for this to get personal. It's just a general thread for peoples different advice.

Sure everyone has different opinions, and some people may not agree with each others opinions, but at the end of the day, for someone considering this mod, there's a lot of good information in the past couple of pages, from all different scenarios, which will help them make their OWN educated decision on what's more applicable to their personal setup.

And there's a pic of a dinosaur with an intercooler on it's head, and that's awesome.

Cheers,
Shazza

Alexxxx, you just shot yourself in the foot!

Never experienced heat soak! Bollucks!

I remember clearly at an RS Nasho meet they had to pour water over your TMIC to get the best run out of it.

because they did two power runs with the bonnet open ? car is not designed to sit still and have the motor spinning at 7000 rpm on the spot...

please, make it relative.. when they learned how to dyno a top mount car it pulled over 15kw more.

LOL, pooring water over the TMIC to make it work.
What a total fail.

water + air = mist. mist is an excellent way to lower intake charge temps. otherwise STi must be stupid for putting factory waterspray on .. ?

So back on track. Once the decision has been made to go fmic, how does one determine the brand, type, core size, inlet/outlet size, piping size, e.t.c obviously it's got something to do with what other mods you have, but I'm sure there is also a science behind it?

For your average joe :

- Justjap or Chinabay core 600x300x76 is the usual size people opt for but smaller can fit eg 500x280x65 ect
- 2.5" intlet and outlets usually found on bigger cores with 2" on some smaller ones will be fine
- 2" hot side piping and expansion just before it joins to the cooler if necessary (buy a kit or get it made, can be had very cheap these days)
- 2.5" cold side and then 2.5" > 2.75"(?) silicone to the throttle body
- Most off the shelf piping kits (ebay or whatever) can be easily modded to suit under headlight piping route.
- Cut away some metal under each headlight and tidy it up with anti-rust and silicone tubing to cover the sharp edges
- Mount the core up the front, with some basic handy skills a bracket can be made easily.
- On Gen1's make sure the core sits low enough in order for the piping and bends to clear the headlights (where a smaller core comes in handy)
- With your left over piping make a CAI

WIN and enjoy the sound of chipmunks fighting eachother in the engine bay.

15psi and a v29. tmic no question.

Dont get me wrong, a fmic has its place just not on 99% of setups that use a stock subaru turbo, ie. td/vf.
