I know you can’t stop it and it’s progress and all that but it’s sad to see all the small rider driven/rider owned brands that have gone broke now that all of the multinationals have come to the party.
For me one of the coolest things about the snowboard industry (and board sports for that matter) is that they represent rebel sports. Snowboarders were band from ski resports for years. Major sport brands turned their noses up at making equipment for snowboarding. The only way for snowboarding to succeed was for brands built by snowboarders for snowboarders to support snowboarding. Now that all of the hard work has been done, brands like nike and adidas wanna get on the gravy train to make a few more million dollars while at the same time putting core brands out of business, the same brands that built the lifestyle up.

Surely there will still be a fair amount of brand loyalty? I would assume they aren't going to sell a cheap product
Unfortunately not enough. The amount of brands that are struggling or have gone under shows this. Brands like nike and adidas can out market any core brand. They can buy the athletes, they can buy all the contests, they can buy all the marketing space. They are “buy” legitimacy by saturating their brands all over the sport. They have deep pockets so can afford to lose money for many years while the core brands go out of business leaving a situation that you see in skateboarding right now. Nike, Adidas, Converse etc have ruined the skateboard industry. They have a 5-7 year plan where they will lose money while they try and gain market share by slowly strangling these foundation brands into the pages of history. I now have a situation where my 12 year old nephew can’t remember a time before those brands being part of the landscape so sees it as normal for Nike to be the largest footwear supplier for skateboarding. It’s fucken lame.
Maybe I’m showing my age but I grew up in the 80’s/90’s when skateboarding and snowboarding were outlaw activities. Before Monster Energy and Redbull money. Before ESPN pumped X-Games. Before Apple and Target started sponsoring our “athletes”. The whole lifestyle had to be supported by skateboarders/snowboarders because no one else wanted a piece of it. we made this. it’s way more than a sport it’s a culture.
Eventually there will be no core brands left, no core stores just Rebel Sports where you go to buy your Nike Snowboard Boots and outerwear, Adidas Skate Shoes, Puma Snowboard and Binding or Asics skateboard. You’ll need to find the right section in the store somewhere between the triathlon section and the netball section I’m imagining.
I have no problem with these brands if they stick to their structured sport. Those sports need them, we don’t.
As I said I know you can’t stop progress and this was always gonna happen but I don’t like one bit

Sounds shit....
When I was in high school, i was really into bodyboarding. As a sport is was just gaining traction. Yeah we coped a lot of shit in the line up, but more and more kids jumped on it.
Brands like Manta had massive kudos, and got you respect when you paddled out on one. I think now they are owned by KMart(!) and produce shit.
I could never afford one, so I rode a second hand BZ. fork I was cool!!!
Sig worthy.
