I have heard a clunk noise for the last week so i took it to a suspension place and transmission place to see if they knew what was going on..
found out after going to both its the bushes on the diff and i went to one place to get it fixed and he said its nasty under there and i shouldnt be driving it atm..
he is gonna charge me $570 or $1070 depending on if he has to drop the whole thing out or not...
Anyone know a place in Brisbane that i might be able to get another quote?

That's pretty reasonable.

Taking out the gearbox is a big job. Did it to a mates car a few weeks ago and it was on stands in the garage for over a week. He saved about $1900 doing the job himself ($2500 quote).

Don't need to remove the gearbox to take the diff out

I remember doing this in a few hrs with my mechanic on my lib when I first got it...

The hardest part is probably putting the replacement bushes in...

I'm assuming it's the bushes in the crossmember that the diff studs go thru?
They are a PITA to do, but not a $1K job. A place here in Canberra quoted me $250 - $300 depending how bad the old one's where to get out.

They told me they just use a puller type thing they made up to pull the old ones old, then use something else to press the new one's in.
He also said if you do it yourself, to use a big socket to bash the old one's out - or if they are really stuck/stuffed, burn them out or use a cold chisel, and then bash the new one's in.

I did this a month or so ago, after hearing how much a mate paid I decided to do it myself. I was told the whole rear end would have to come out to get the bushes pushed out (I think the service manual says this as well).

It wasn't really that hard, I didn't take the rear end out, just removed the diff. The hardest bit was getting the old bushes out/new ones in, after 11 years mine were well and truly stuck in there. They were so worn only the outer metal ring stayed in the crossmember after taking the diff out.

I ended up using a piece of scrap we had lying around, a 'cylinder' of steel, 65mm OD, 35-ish mm long with a hole through the centre. Turned it down to 60mm on the lathe and put a lip on so it would sit flush and push the old one out square. Put a decent sized bolt through, with another a brace on the other side of the crossmember to pull against, and viola! Still took considerable force to get it out.

In the end it basically took me a day, $60 for the bushes and a few thousand dollars worth of tools and machinery haha. I used Whiteline KDT-906 bushes.

Just took some pics incase my explanation is rubbish-

The setup, thats not the bolt I used just a quick mock up.

Yeah still got it mate, I took the above pics this arvo in case my explanation made no sense to anyone but myself.

PM me your address and I'll get it in the post Monday if you like. I'll try & find the right sized bolt etc over the weekend, the one pictured would be too long from memory.

Cheers,
Andrew.
