Subaru’s newest model, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive XV has made a massive impression in its first full month of sales, retailing 1005, according to official VFACTS sales figures.

XV was the best-selling small SUV under $40,000 in February, commanding 20.5 per cent of its segment.

Also performing strongly was Forester, with 1030 sales.

Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: “We’ve had an amazing response to the XV with online and showroom traffic increasing massively to coincide with its debut.

“Our XV marketing campaign, spearheaded by a television ad that has gone viral thanks to its fantastic appeal, is turning heads and bringing lots of new people to the Subaru brand.”

Total Subaru sales for February were 3225, including 363 Libertys, 347 Outbacks, 124 Tribecas and 356 Imprezas.

The new generation Impreza has just gone on sale and Subaru anticipates a significant sales increase in its small car model during March.

About Subaru:

Every Subaru sold in Australia features Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a horizontally-opposed Boxer engine, standard Vehicle Dynamics Control electronic stability program, and a five-star rating for occupant safety from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The result - driving confidence.

CX-5 will give it a run for its money (for those who want FWD + cheap SUV). AWD is overpriced and a slug, not that the subaru is much better.

6spd man = fail on the 2.0 torqueless, gutless 1400kg car.
CVT = good at hiding engines lack of torque.

needs the turbo diesel and/or turbo petrol.

If someone is looking for a performance 'SUV' Subaru made by Subaru, they'll buy an XT Forester.

I think it's hit a target.

However, I'm not a huge fan!

it's only really mentioned as a "small SUV" because there is no real category for it (not a sedan, not a hatch but perhaps the term "crossover"). it is still an impreza which is a different category to the foz. i've owned/driven/ridden in nearly every model subaru post 85 and there are plenty of differences in the platforms.

the CX5 suffers the same fate, check all the latest reviews. sluggish 2.0 torque less motor in a 1400kg+ car does not work well!

it is a very solid chassis and could easily handle a turbocharged motor.

Yeah Andy and I went to the MY12 Impreza launch last month and got to have a good look over one of these. I must say i didn't hate it as much as i did when i saw the initial XV concept. haven't taken one for a spin though so can't really comment on the drive

Likewise. There are aspects of it I like but I personally wouldn't buy one if I were in the market for one of these lifestyley crossover type hatches / softroaders.

I'm yet to be won over by CVT gearboxes. Anyone got any opinions on them from first hand usage? Assuming you're after an auto for whatever reason...

Looks tops in the white!

As Alex said, the sales have proven the appeal. We are all going to have biased opinions on it because it just simply isnt something that grabs our attention as performance enthusiasts.

In saying that, if i was locked into a marriage contract and optioned an offspring, i would certainly consider one ( If ever available in a low-blow turbo setup ).

I find it really difficult to understand why they wouldnt put a 2.5 in it for some extra beans.

I think they would also have a better go at the Impreza if they had something between the top NA 2.0 RS model and WRX, by slotting in an NA 2.5 and selling as something like an RS-X or GT ect.

Also, nice to see the Liberty right under the Forester as the top seller!

Turbo diesel is for Europe not for Australia
Don't be fooled this FB 2.0 is quicker then an EJ2.5
I used to own a MY03 RS 2.5 SOHC EJ2.5
a MY99 Foz 2.0 SOHC EJ2.0
And still own a MY 09 RS 2.0 DOHC EJ2.0

And the MY12 FB2.0 DOHC Deul VCD and so much fun to drive with the CVT Gearbox it's so much quicker then the old
I Traded in a MY07 Forester XT Turbo and I DON'T miss the Turbo I have as much fun in the XV without having to worry about wasting petrol

I would say the CVT has the attributes to make it feel and perform quicker than a conventional cogswapper.

i'm saying they SHOULD use the turbo diesel i know it is a variant in europe.

redbook MY03 RS 0-100 auto = 10.2sec

Just wondering the front bumber protector - is that a factory standard accessory?

I went with the XV-S - thinking now should have gone for the L although the HID headlights are quite good. Did you test drive the S model? Just curious as to your thoughts between the two.

I know there is the 1.6 Litre Petrol then 2 iitre petrol and 2l diesel variants but I am sure there is no turbo diesel XV in the market in Europe or anywhere. I wanted a turbo diesel model and was considering the Forester but after driving the XV there was no comparision in how fun the XV was to drive. Given that I dont need the extra boot space - very happy with the XV.

There was a press release stating the XV will get 2.5 Diesel Turbo in 2014 after Subaru revamp the Forester engine - and upgrade the Forester transmission. I bought the XV now as couldnt wait til 2014 - will trade in for the turbo diesel then. But if sales are strong and the interest is there Subaru may bring in the turbo XV a bit sooner.

BTW the CVT in the XV in my opinion is a far better option to drive - 6 speed with paddle shift - make for a very responsive drive. Coming from v8 Falcon and 4.0l Falcon- a ford man all my life I was very impressed with the XV Cvt version so bought one after first test drive. Had it for over a month and love to drive it.

Thanks - already have the vehicle and the accessories installed and the list of available accessories. Just hadnt seen the bonnet protector of the type that SoobyXV-l had in their photo - was just curious.

The bonnet protector as listed on the web site is a clear plastic not a coloured resin as in soobyxv-l photo
