Having pulled the motor had a look at the clutch. Still has a bit left in it but im goin to replace it anyway.

Not sure which way to go when picking a new clutch for it though. Im thinking 2 options.

1. Get a new OEM clutch and get the flywheel machined. (flywheel doesnt seem to bad though)

2. Get a HD organic excedy one with new flywheel maybe?

If I go the Excedy will I need to get the new flywheel to or will it mate up to the OEM one?
Whats the best place within Australia to source either one.

Id like to get one ASAP so I can get everything back together and get the car back on the road.

Cheers in advance

Ryan

Go to the wreckers and pick up a single mass flywheel dude.

Then get a clutch to suit that. Will be very worth it for all clutch changes in the future and easier on the foot too ;)

Nah for some reason all 2.5 Subarus have DMF (except maybe the Gen2? Not 100%)

My mechanic has been specialising in Subys for years and recommended I go single when the time comes.

Also, $100 from a wreckers or $1000 from Exedy...!

From what I've read, grab a clutch/flywheel from a 2.0 Liberty and it will slap straight in?

Oh K.. But i think mine is solid mass flywheel, I'll confirm tonight.

Little bit of info I just stumbled accross

Posted Image

The images above show the visible difference between the dual mass and single mass flywheel.

DMF - no springs are visible on the clutch plate (they are built into the flywheel)

Posted Image

SMF - you can see the springs built into the clutch plate. Also evident is the difference in the flywheel (to the left at the back)

Found here: http://www.clutch-ki...s-flywheel.html

Pretty sure after looking at that mines already a SMF

Nah for some reason all 2.5 Subarus have DMF (except maybe the Gen2? Not 100%)

They 2.5 wrx/sti is not.
Neither was gen2 and rev a,b,c gen 3 rx's.

I'd suggest a ej22 SM flywheel or a 2.5 SM and a exedy oem replacement clutch to suit..

Cheers,
Zach.

OEM clutch kit mate. order from one of the many online subaru dealers from the USA, you are looking at around $500-600 shipped.

Interesting. We have the same car though and I've been told mine is?

It's extraordinarily hard to press. Well, I'm used to it now but everyone who drives the car comments on it...

Last gen 3 Liberty 2.5L clutch i got was $590 its bang for the buck all in box ready to go...dont waste time going to the wreckers getting a flywheel then machining it etc etc just not worth the time and effort....

you can get it from any good parts store burson repco etc they might make some $$$$ on top if its a buy in, but id get it from any brake and clutch place where the turn around on clutches is big they have greater buying power and most of them pass the saving on to the customer...

Just got an email back from Kris at rising sun subaru and they've got them for $550 inc gst + freight. Sounds alright for an OEM kit. I just talked to my cousin who runs his own gearbox and diff buisiness and he put me onto a local guy that he uses all the time for clutches.

So Im going to go have a chat to the guy tomorrow and see what he can do. My cousin said to go with a Daikin clutch, supposedly they make the clutches for most manufactures or something?

Cheers for all the info anyway guys, sent me in the right direction.

Ryan.

get the oem clutch!

they are all made by the company but they are not the same clutch. $550 is a GREAT price for a genuine clutch kit.

just make sure you get the flywheel skimmed (i'm pretty sure my 06 has a step in the flywheel machinist should pick this up)

Morgan is correct.

My Gen III RX is a DMF and it groans like a mofo if I boot it off the line.

Stooopid idea Mr Subaru.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

+1

All gen 3 N/A 2'5L came DMF but i think they even extended the DMF's to the Foza 03 onwards 2.5L.....did the gen4's n/a's use DMF in 2.5's??

alex is the winner, its definiately a solid mass fly wheel and as you said, its stepped.

Im taking it with me tomorrow to get skimmed. Going to see the difference in the OEM and Daikin as well.

Cheers again guys

Ended up getting the flywheel machined and a new daikin (excedy) clutch kit for $615. Wasnt to bad and should last a while.

Was talking to the guy Morgan and he said that they do come in a dual mass, so be wary still.

Thanks for all the info guys.
