The clutch in my Subaru B4 has started to slip consistently. It has had a shudden for quite a while and there is an oil leak in that vicinity. I think oil has been leaking on to it.

Firstly, what clutch kit would you recommend?

Secondly, the gearbox has always had a whistling/wurring sound since I owned it. It's done 30,000km with no real change. I was told it was the transfer bearing. Where can I order this bearing from? I'd like to fix it while I replace the clutch.

Thirdly, is there any other gearbox related parts like bearings I should be replacing or looking at while I am at it?

Lastly, what seals might leak on to the clutch? I want to replace these too.

Thanks for the advice.
Also forgot to mention it is a 2002 MY03 3GEN Liberty B4.

hmm not too sure about the whine it might be normal

They have a pretty good diameter size clutch so probably an execdy replacement and you can go for a heavy duty but it might not have as smooth of a pedal feel/have bit of shudder  and get the flywheel machined

As far as the leak the big one is rear main seal thats a given to change when the box is off it can leak given time

Also there is a small bearing in the flywheel that should be replaced at the same time

I doubt the whine is normal. You can hear it in most gears, the middle 3 gears are quite noticeable. It is loudest in third.

Trying to track down a transfer bearing. Any one have part numbers or details that might help?

Also there is a small bearing in the flywheel that should be replaced at the same time

Does that bearing have a particular name? Is it not included in the clutch kit?

For part#'s (and factory parts)

https://partsouq.com/

Flywheel bearing would not normally be in a clutch kit

Id go a Australian clutchs HD organic, kit comes with a spigot and throw out bearing plus can option in a new light weight flynwheel, I've run a 5speed set up and now the 6speed. I sell this kit to a few of my customers when they ask for a hd Subaru kit and they all love it.

Thanks for the suggestion,

I've already purchased an Exceedy HD cushion button clutch kit from Reevsy. Hopefully the gearbox is strong enough. Don't think the kit has a spigot bearing so I'll order that.

I have access to a hoist down on the coast so I'm going to crack out the stethoscope to figure out what bearing is making the noise. I was just going to leave the car there until I got all the parts but I got rear-ended in my wife's Impreza so our insurance might have her car in for repairs...if they don't just write it off. On that note...anyone reckon I can find a Forester GT for around 5k? :P

Hey guys.

I pulled the gearbox out and discovered it was leaking tran oil into the clutch. Since the gearbox has to be split the box open I decided to replace all the bearings.

I have got all the Subaru part numbers from PartSouq. Because of the terrible exchange rate the parts will cost me $420 including postage.

Any suggestions how I might find replacement parts cheaper?

The parts I'm after are:

Subaru  806427020 NDLE BRG-27X46X21 18.39$
Subaru  806325100 ROLL BRG-25X65X32 37.37$
Subaru  806725090 OILSEAL-25X44X10 2.72$
Subaru  806342010 CYLINDRICAL RLR BRG 29.29$
Subaru  806342020 TAPER ROLLER BEARING 74.13$
Subaru  806525020 # OBD # CYLINDRICAL RLR BRG 4.67$
Subaru  806533010 CYLINDRICAL RLR BRG 4.07$
Subaru  806230170 BALL BRG-30X72X17 19.89$
Subaru  806255010 RADIAL BALL BEARING 20.94$
Subaru  806322040 ROLL BRG-22X56X17 19.90$
Subaru  806330080 ROLL BRG-30X62X17 18.08$
Subaru  806735210 OILSEAL-35X50X11 3.78$

Cheers,

Have you split the box yet? Are the bearings dodgy already? Or is it just preventative maintenance? If they are OK then you could probably just replace the 2 main shaft bearings and input seal. I just did this exact thing due to a leaking seal, possibly caused from a dead spigot bearing and I reckon I could of even got away with just replacing the smaller one only. Looks to be a much higher level of complexity to re race the lower shaft too if doing it yourself.

Yes and no.

We know one of the bearings is stuffed in the middle of the box somewhere so we elected to replace all the main bearings.
