Few mainstream hot hatches have tugged as many heartstrings in the last decade or so than the Subaru WRX. From its turbocharged four-cylinder heart to the traction of its all-wheel-drive footprint, Rex has been the benchmark by which others are judged since its debut in the States as a 2002 model. Suffice it to say that the next WRX, due in 2014, has mighty big shoes to fill.

Judging by the spy photos you see above, those shoes will be planted under bodywork that's not particularly different from that of the standard Impreza. We'd be lying if we said we weren't hoping for a bit more pizazz from this fourth-gen WRX, but most of its tepid styling – assuming these images are indeed indicative of the 2014 WRX – would be forgiven if the machine boasts more turbocharged performance than ever before.

As you can see (follow link below), Subaru's engineering team brought along a current third-gen WRX hatchback for testing alongside the new model, and a brief comparison shows how much more restrained the styling of the latest Impreza is when compared to its forebear. We also note what appears to be an intercooler sticking further up into the hood scoop than the third-gen model, which could mean a turbocharged version of Subie's new FA engine is underhood. We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, peruse the images above and carry on speculating.

IMO.. they aren't going to drive around final release of the new 2014 rex for testing purposes.

Just look at the side mirrors.

Looks like they had a land cruiser lying around and were desperate so they just grabbed anything.

Just looks like an Impreza.... might be a test platform... I hope so anyway. I thought they were making it into a little hot hatch? Hardly seperates itself from the Impreza :P

Hopefully they are just using the body to test the engine because that is one ugly ass car, look at the pics of it side by side with the current wrx, it just doesn’t compare. If they bring out that wrx and a turbo BRZ I wonder what car everyone will choose……..

IF there is a turbo brz it will be 50k plus. Wrx will stick to being 40k. Different markets, I didn't buy an 86\brz because they are just too lacking in space.

The current impreza isn't an oil painting either.

Looks like Subarus new designer is settling in well into his new role..

I can see what they're doing from a sales and marketing point of view, but it's a huge kick in the guts to loyalists. Unfortunately quantity sits above quality in their case.

Its sad to say the Gen4 was probably their most elegant and timeless shape and that's 5 years old now. Apart from the current STI in sedan and hatch guise, everything else is very bland. Toyota stakes much?

BRZ/86 makes up a little bit for it but sheesh. Ain't what they used to be that's for sure!
