Merc = wanky crap.

Q7 & Porsche = touareg in fancy clothes.

Defender = nothing wanky there.

Defender, I'd consider, but need to drive it in peak hour traffic. I'll take it for a test drive, but dare I say, it'll be somewhat agricultural.

BD - No. I'd rather emasculate myself by cutting my own testicles off with a blunt pocket knife, than go within three feet of, let alone, drive or own a Land Rover Freelander.

Patrol 3 litre is totally different to Pathfinder/Navara 2.5 litre turbo diesel.

Nick - thinking outside the square. Good options, but as Chris has stated.... and they're slightly too old.

Chris - will be a novated lease I imagine. I'll be laying eyes on the contract within the next few days. May turn out I won't be able to afford something this much, but here's hoping.

Alex, I've just sold our Defender 90 earlier this year and used it as a daily driver for around 6 months at one point.
Great rig, but a real PITA to drive around town as a daily.

I'd love a Disco 4. So would the missus (apart from a Range Rover Sport Supercharged.... More than I can afford pal!)

But potentially too much cash moniez.

Disco 3 would be too old (2009 is last production).

Would be awesome, but I don't see it happening.

British car servicing makes my wallet wince.

Alex... Don't get a Disco mate. Maintenance nightmare.
In the SUV style diesel market the only ones I'd look at are Territory, Touareg, Q7, XC90 & X5.

My next car will probs be a territory or touareg.

Challenger or Ranger would be my pick. Likewise a Hilux although value for money is questionable and I do recall you speaking of a conversation you had with someone from ARB who does not rate them very highly...

How about a Cherokee? Pretty sure they come available with an excellent 6-cylinder Mercedes diesel. I have read that they catch fire a lot (Google it). But if you can live with that, it would be a nice comfy rig to churn through the miles in. Should tow allright.

Alex, also note that in this country, the tow capacity marketed by manufactures (ie; 3tonne) can sometimes be deceptive. Read the fine print. It might say that IF you actually tow 3T "on the ball", the maximum ball weight will drop from say 220kg to 180kg (I'm just making up numbers here). I don't know what you plan on towing or if it'll even be an issue, but just be privy of this and read the fine print for your own knowledge. All the usual penalties apply (void insurance etc etc).

Buy an XV mate.
They tow 10000kg, consumption is 1.75l/100km.
They are the shit!!!
Ill call you later.:-)

In this country, you gotta make the money first.
Then when you get the money, you get the power.
Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

My inlaws have a Grand Cherokee with the 5cyl Benz diesel. The factory towpack is rated at 3200kg.
The 6 bolts that hold it to the body (more like tinfoil) have torn away.

If you want a 4WD diesel then you really can't go past the new V6 turbo diesel Navara with its 7 speed auto. My parents just recently bought one as a tow vehicle for their business and it quite easily tows things that their previous Mitsubishi Triton 3.2 litre diesel struggled with.

We tested a few of the other 4WD utes and most don't compare in terms of both power and comfort. The Amarok is definitely the least powerful of all, how it is rated to tow 3.3 tonne is beyond me. The Ranger would be a close second to the Navara though, still has heaps of power and the top spec has all the creature comforts.

Slight correction:

Hilux is the least of the bunch at 2.2t (word on the street is that the new updated diesel/chassis is due 2016. WTF?)
Amarok is 2.8t
New Ranger/BT50 is at 3.35t

I'd love to consider the Nissan Pathfinder Ti 550 (V6 TD). But it's out of reach price wise.

And unfortunately utes are out of the equation. My gf won't have one. Has to be a wagon (already have a Ranger in the family).
