VW V6TDI the end.
Close the thread please mods/Alex.

This. Dad has a Q7 with the same enjin, good on fuel, plenty of torque, awesome for towing. Not sure if it has since been fixed, but the water pump (i think?) has a plastic impeller which failed and left coolant all over the garage floor one morning. It was covered under warranty, and I think it affected most audi engines so I expect it would be fixed, but just something to keep an eye out for.

Hi guys.

Thanks Chris for your invaluable input.

I've spoken to a finance company. I'm allowed and have been pre-approved for a $65k chattel mortgage, with a 30% balloon after 5 years

I have $10k pocket money.

So we could say that I now have $70k to play with?

Car can be up to five years old (thereabouts)

Changes things up a bit, and opens many opportunities.

My shortlist is now:

Landrover Discovery 4
VW Toerag
Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (almost bought one yesterday out of sheer frustration)
Range Rover Sport
Landcruiser 200 series

am I missing something?

No worries at all Alex. Make sure you keep that log book going so that you can get party cash back from the tax man!

Landrover Discovery 4 - Yep, good rig, but you know about the service cost issues here. You'll love it if you get one and won't worry about the servicing so much.
VW Toerag - This would be the most logical choice, so much kit for your buck and you'll be able to get a near new, if not brand new one. They are a good thing.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (almost bought one yesterday out of sheer frustration) - Don't do it. you'll end up hating it with a passion.
Range Rover Sport - Built on the Disco4 chassis, but with less cabin space.

Landcruiser 200 series - Too big for your sales role and the majority of the driving you'll be doing. Get one when you retire and want to two a 50ft caravan around the Northern Territory.

I'd be considering Disco 4 and Touareg, but leaning towards Touareg for the following reasons:
- Better engine
- Better economy
- More bang for your buck
- Better to drive around town
- less concern around reliability....

tough one.

I know for the VW they are 15K intervals and servicing starts from $250 upwards

If you decide to go the VW try Barloworld Five Dock or Penrith Volkswagen... They do the best deals in Sydney for brand new

Alex, also try a few regional dealerships.
What I'm finding at the moment is that some of my country customers are really struggling and are telling me that the whole town is suffering.
They might be able to clear a bit of their floor plan and they'll be happy to get a bit of turnover. Remember End Of Month.

Oh forgot to mention Bathurst as well for out of Sydney...

These are all recommended by one of the account managers here at work that deals with VW

Given I don't have them anymore, it's been a while since I took my Disco2 and Defender 90 into a Landrover dealership.

From memory servicing used to range between 400-2000 a pop. Depending on th work being done. The parts e.t.c. aren't the killer, it's the excessive labour charges you receive for being in a "premium" car and a "premium" dealership.
Pretty much I found that Land Rover dealerships are very good at prolonging the labour time, and finding things "wrong". this seems to work fine for the stereotypical rich and unaware Rangie and Disco drivers.

Anyone that is a serious Land Rover nut doesn't go anywhere near dealerships for their servicing requirements.

To your point though; yes, 20k service intervals will keep the price down I suppose. So, the extra expense might just be a moot point.

My mate just dropped serious dorrah on his Defender 130. Labour costs plus parts >$3k. Had to go all the way to Penrith and they had the car for 3 weeks.

Bit high maintenance.

I drove a Disco4.
Near new, good nick, nice car.
On the highway you wouldn't know it was diesel. Actually you really couldn't tell much anywhere.
Look mate, this thread is becoming a gunna.
You are either full of shit and can't buy anything around that money or you are delusional and believe you can.
Maybe you should take some pointers from some of the old OZLib Gunna crew.

Frank - I consider that smack talk.

I would have it in my right mind to fly up there and slap you silly!

In fact. I'm gunna .

As soon as I'm gunna run 600hp with my NA EJ25 after I convert from Turbo... Because I read on the internet, and a mechanic that used to screw on the valve caps for Possum Bourne told me, that a port and polish will get me there.

Prepare yourself. I have the internet on my side. Fear my funny images!!

Bring it mate. Your trash talk on forums has gone on long enough.
It's time to put up or shut up.
You could never Gunna at that level.
This is your level.

Massive shout out to Frank for inspecting the car for me. What a top bloke. Only trouble is that I can't get rid of a white stain on the driver's seat.

And a massive shout out to my awesome girlfriend Tara. Despite fighting for turns to drive the thing, it turns out she fits well into the boot.
