I call BS.

The inlaws '04 Grand Cherokee turbo diesel is rated at 3.2t.
Has 6 bolts (my Commodore is rated at 1200kg and has eight bolts) holding the towbar on the recycled jam tin body.

The caravan they tow tore the towbar from the body and Jeep Oz washed their hands on the matter.
Since when does a 'Customer Service' person say "Go ahead and try, you'll get noting out of us."?

my rents sold there troopcarrier to buy one of these back in the day, turbo diesel cherokee, similar things happened to the towbar, then a few months later engine caught fire

insurance paid them out! lesson learnt, never to buy a jeep again, altho they say it was the most comfortable car, moreso than there CX-7

Bump.

I've test driven a couple cars so far:

Challenger - cool, a little agricultural, but honest.
Disco 4: Drooooooooooooooooool
Jeep GC: Drool. Nice car. But wary of after sales support and "motor built by Ferrari" (lol... dealer tried to pull this line on me!)
Territory Platinum: drove well, but too softroader. Leather interior was cheap and nasty.

Gonna sus out some more at the motor show :)

Hahaha! Ferrari..... What on earth?

Disco 4 is certainly in a different league to the other three, but yeah, nice to roll around in. Be wary of maintenance costs!

Yeh, what the hell?! Would love to have seen the look on his face when he got told that.

I've been doing research into this topic for my own purposes and the Pajero tops my list at present. The Disco is "droool" as you mentioned.

Disco 4 is out of my league, unless I go a novated lease or something.

With the jeep, old mate tried to tell me the motor was made by Ferrari, to which, I laughed at him. He asked what was so funny. I told him that his spin story was humorous, and I corrected him.

Saw the disco 4 at the motor show again. Drooooooooooooooooool!!!

Servicing a land rover: how much money are we talking here?

Average service cost might cost around the $600 mark if you're lucky, although, if you get a diesel the intervals are stretched out further. It's not so much the standard servicing costs that matter so much, it's the premuim they charge for labour, parts and the massive potential to use both labour and parts for components that fail. And components will fail.

They are a great rig, but have questionable reliability.

If I were looking to go down that path, I'd look at a Disco 3 HSE, with a good service history.

Have a dig around the Australian Land Rover Owners forum aulro.com. They're a good bunch and you'll see what sort of weird behaviour these things get up to... Owning a Land Rover is a unique experience, you put up with their quirks simply because they are an awesome car to drive.

As I mentioned before my in-laws are caravaners.

One of their crew had a Disco diesel and after walking home from the workshop on the last of multiple occasions, walked past a Toyota dealer and bought a secondhand 200 series.
Reason?
The repair bills on the disco in the time he owned it had topped $20k.

If I could keep my Leggy, i'd buy a BMW 335i most likely... OTHERWISE i'd get a brand new STi or an '06 STi S401 (or whatever its called).

Would be awesome! Although I hopefully in the next few years can do this with my own money if I keep workin me ass off, need to buy a house first though.

I thought Amarok was manual only?

MY12.5 on you can autos.

Always a hard decision Alex. You seem to be well onto it with the test driving.

I am not a Jeep fan, but that is more to do with Jeeps of old (previous generation) having interiors made out of poorly cut up ice cream containers.. I could not tell you anything about their 4x4 capabilities though, that is for you to report back on :P

What if you just take the missus for a drive in an Amarok and see if a few drives can't win her over? :P Dual Cab Trendline TDI420 (420nm from 1750rpm) 8 speed auto 4Motion, 3T towing and 1T payload for $48,990.

Alex,
Is this car on a novated lease to you or supplied as a tool of the trade?
If you plan on turning it over every 3 years, then I would buy whatever you are happy with.

Not sure how I'll finance this Jase. All I know is that I have a car allowance from work, and I'll have to book in to see an accountant.

Bumping this up again.

Going to go have a look at a MY10 VDJ200R Landcruiser this weekend.

$70k at a stealership, secondhand, but i'm liking the sound of a Turbo diesel V8.

I'm looking at cars above the budget, but I'm thinking I'll be keeping this car for a while, and the g/f will be chipping in also.

I have never had a company car but if I was doing heaps of Kms I would just buy something with no emotional attachment that I could turn over every three years.

I would be hesitant to rack up the Kms if I knew I was to buy it at the end of the lease, unless I had higher payments and had a small residual.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Brother in law has the v8 TD cruiser at home. I drive it every now and then. Awesome car, very quick with stupid amounts of torque however it's pretty heavy on fuel. The manual (5sp) also needs another cog as it revs very high at cruise on the highway.
If you are going to be doing a few km's for work and fuel economy is an issue, this may be something to consider.

thanks for the feedback guys.

acres - cheers for the headsup. I was looking at purchasing an auto, but the fuel issue is a valid one. Fuel card won't last forever, and the reason i sold my last troopy
(4.2l i6 td) was because it was big, heavy and thirsty.

gonna take it for a test drive anyway, just to see what its like.

I once read in a report that the 6th gear in the auto was designed as a massive overdrive gear for Europe (autobahn use) and as such wouldn't engage on our 110kph highways. This was when they were first released though so I'm not sure whether toyota rectified this or not. Might pay to check that too.

Not sure if it was already mentioned on a previous page but considered a D-Max? They're pretty capable. Interior is nice, quick acceleration and enough torque to comfortably tow a float and 2 nags.
