Sucks to hear about your car mate. How could she not see you! :S... Stay away from Cressidas though, they literally eat head gaskets for lols. Our old family car was an MX83, went through 5 head gaskets in the 4 years we owned it!

+1 to the charade idea. Cheap, reliable, super easy to work on, light on fuel, cheap parts from wreckers, there heaps of them and there is a few cool upgrades made for them!

Disregards 3ltr outback because of gearbox, considers test driving a 2ltr land whale because its manual. lol.
