Hhaha how much are you getting change over shafts for?? I think the boots cost me like $8 or $10, I had to replace one on the passenger side inner joint on the B4 just recently actually.... noticed it while I was on the hoist dropping oil, went and had something to eat come back and one of Dads mechanics had already replaced it for me haha winning.Haha. Im out of practice.
I don't replace boots anymore, just not worth it when you compare the cost against a change-over shaft.

Ahhh cool.. yeah I think that is what other mechs might be thinking... effort for inner CV boots, not worth it... might as well do the whole shaft and charge more... which could be why I'm getting stuffed around...
Its not about charging more, its about better value for money.
If the boot has split there is every chance that dirt and grit has gotten into the joint accelerating the wear of the joint.
What if the boot was replaced and 12 months later the joint becomes noisy but the boot is still fine? Then you would be up for the cost of a c/o shaft anyway.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Good point... didn't think of it that way... well guess I'l get the shaft replaced while I'm at it...

Its more about the labour involved in stripping and cleaning the shaft. Fair enough if you DIY.Hhaha how much are you getting change over shafts for?? Yeah I dunno what it would be, but you do find some damn scary shit.Agreed but how much of that is safety related? I agree there needs to be a system to maintain the safety of vehicles used on the roads but testing for rego seems to be the wrong way to go about it.
Looking at cars between the two states, I couldn't say if one averages safer cars than the other.
We had an Hyundai excel in one time I was home (sometime in the last year) it come in with bald tyres, metal on metal brake pads, shocks rooted (the dude got them replaced when he found out, Dad showed me one of the front shocks, with the spring and everything off it, it would collapse completely to bottom out under its own weight) , brake lights not working and one of the front control arms was rusting out (hadn't seen that before!) had it not have come in for a check then god knows what could have happened there, dude had no intention of fixing anything he didn't have to.

Ahh, yeah true, Easy for me to forget about the labour factor! Its more about the labour involved in stripping and cleaning the shaft. Fair enough if you DIY.
Taking that into account, for sure, much better off going a reco shaft for piece of mind!
I was more thinking along the lines of being happy to take the risk of damage down the track for the sake of $10 vs $300, but yeah when it comes to $200+ vs $300 (for that matter even if it was $150, I would still go a reco over a new boot!)

I went on a track day at Phillip Island with that Torana when it was in its old set up (only about 650hp).
God damn it is FAST. Shook the ground each time he passed me and he was only revving it to about 4000rpm.
Pulling out of Sibeira (an uphill left hander) at 1700rpm it was turning the rear tyres.

That is an even quicker job too! hahaYup, so I'll go new/reco's cv shaft... when I can find someone to do it...
One large nut on the CV through the hub to take off, drop the ball joint, knock the pin through were the shaft connects onto the spline on the gearbox and your shaft will come out pretty easily,

You have inspired me Zaccy.
I will do a DIY this weekend. I know it probably doesn't help you much but my car is on stands ATM so I may as well.
Not very hard really.
