not really wanting to go see how bad it is outside and feel bad while on holiday...

I don't think you will really feel all that bad, well I didn't in the Philippines, you realise it is just how shit is there... I was waiting in the car at this place called Jolly Bee (it is one of their big fast food chains) while waiting for the others to get there shit and come back to the car, meanwhile this little kid probably about 5 or 6 and dirty as all Posted Image comes standing at the window and tapping on it and putting on a sad face and holding his hand out for money.... I didn't know what to do.....So I told him to Posted Image off (maybe not in those words), and he just tapped on the window again and did the same shit... so I got angry at him and told him to Posted Image off again and get a job at which time the dude who was driving us around (whose house we were staying at) reminded me that the real poor ones don't usually speak English and he said that I did the right thing by not giving him money because apparently he probably wouldn't have been able to keep the money any way, it would have gone back to an older dude who sends the young ones out on begging runs on his behalf. Pretty Posted Image'ed up really.

Yeah we copped a few, we were the only tourists at the local market, shit was evil. Got swarmed by people holding their hands out and grabbing for Alisha's bag and shit. I bought some random fruit and we jetted, but our taxi driver/tour guide was over the road having a smoke and a chat to his mates, so they kept going at us. Wife in hospital, heart medication, etc. But they were the only English phrases they seemed to know...?

Plenty of that type of thing going on through out Indonesia and Asia.

Self mutilation and the mutilation of children in order to make a career in begging. I've seen some horribly disfigured people including children begging on the filthy streets in Asia.

The funniest thing I saw was a man with his leg amputated below the knee (supposedly) finishing his begging shift for the day. He stood up and pulling his leg out of a hole in the ground and lit up a smoke then walked off with his cushion & towel he used to disguise his leg scam.

He is an air conditioning technician for Fujitsu. He is in charge of keeping the temperature controlled in the hospitals in our state capital. He's basically the Jesus fan.

I am almost none of these things.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

I know about these kinds of stories dude... friend went to India with his sister, and he was somewhere and she had a kid come up to her and ask for money. She felt bad, so give the kid something, and then out of nowhere, she was swarmed by like 20 kids pulling at her asking her for money. My friend ran back to his sister and shooed the kids away, and she realised her phone and some money she had in her pocket were gone. So bad...

Like in the movie Slumdog Millionaire, the older bad guys will blind kids on purpose to make them look more pitiful...

This is a messed up world...

I'd rather just go somewhere to relax, have some good food and see some tradition... recommendations?

Ahhh.. but both places need serious immunisations, and why doesn't want that... she doesn't like vaccinations, very bad experience a few years ago... so I'm limited too...

I will agree, there is a lot to see here... went for my Honeymoon at the Whitsundays... didn't bother going overseas then and it was awesome, but still feel like seeing some of the world too... LOL!

Oh well, any recommendations of good places in and outside Australia will be considered... will discuss it with the wife... :)

I miss the malaysian/singaporean food...

Do they have the same variety as we have in Aus? that is one thing that annoyed me in the phils, the lack of variety compared to what we have here.. we have food from practically everywhere in the world.

Not always, but most of the time...

I think there is a pretty good variety there... maybe not as much as Australia, but better than you'd expect. I have tried to malaysian food in Aust, and while it isn't bad, its not the same or similar enough to the real thing in Malaysia, I don't know if its the ingredients, or the actual way its cooked... and prices here are insane for malaysian food, and not nearly as spicy.. ;)

Yeah it was piss funny. An American fat lady went after him and abused him for scamming her. Dad got the whole thing on video.

I lived in Penang for over 4 years not far from Batu Ferringhi which is where all the touristy hotels are. The ocean is putrid.

There was A Kampung village over the road. They were just houses made from old scrap tin and refuse. The locals don't really appreciate tourists walking into their villages and taking photos of their day to day goings on. Quickest way to get abused or threatened with a parang in Malaysia.

I miss the Malay food. It was unreal.

We ran into beggars in south america. We only gave money to a couple of them, a kid juggling at the lights. I had to snatch my coke higher than a kid could reach cause she was trying to steal it in Argentina. Opens your eyes to how awesome we have it here.

Thats awesome Josh! I lived in Singapore, so it was a little more modern... but used to go to KL(Johor) for holidays... never been up to Penang though... Singapore beaches are horrid too, thats what you get from an island port I guess and nah, not planning to go to Ferringhi, too touristy I think, so I was thinking good old Georgetown... what do you think?

Yeah I can imagine the Kampung folk wouldn't like tourists around their place... but I could blend in there, wife couldn't. LOL! Ahhh I want a Parang for when the Zombies come... would be awesome!

Oh the food.... damn damn... I'm getting hungry just thinking about it... so many noms!
