Centre Diff - so i think i have a problem.

Ok, so lately i've been hearing noises and i'm thinking the issue is related to Centre Diff. My car is a Manual 2001 Liberty RX with TT conversion.
The symptoms are:
- Low speed full lock turns in carparks, there is a slight clunking and the car sort of lurches
- Only happens when car is warm, ie. you've been driving a while. Not noticeable when cold
- No issues when driving straight or cornering.
Things my mechanic has done recently to try fix this issue: Front CVs, Wheel Bearings and hubs replaced.
Drivetrain is out of a 1999 JDM Legacy RSK
Has anyone had a similar issue in the past or care to diagnose over the interweb?

It's forked.
Wouldn't have happened in a real B4, Timmy.

Haha! If I had wanted a response as helpful as that, I would've PM'd you Tom.
Real B4's have aids.

My gen 2 had a similar problem, it would clunk once warm, my problem was with the rear diff though.

Not sure if torque bind is the cause as it seems to affect the 4eat automatic transmissions.

Pretty certain it's your centre diff, especially if its really only when doing a sharp turn at low speed. Your description sounds spot on.

Ben (Ichiban) thinks centre diff.
Should probably fix it haha...
I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

My folks had this same problem in their 2001 Outback. apparently to fix it you need to change the oil in a chamber somewhere around the centre diff / gearbox location (Dad wasn't exactly sure where it is). But the problem is the chamber is sealed and thus you need to buy a whole replacement unit.
I guess this isn't going to help much if I don't know what it's called but that's how my folks got theirs fixed.

Yes, the Viscous Coupling, which is also called a Centre Diff. It is a sealed unit and therefore is not serviceable.

There is a Phase 1 which is up to 1998 and Phase 2 which is 1999 onwards.
So i'll be needing a Phase 2. Thanks for the offer.
