Unhappy staff = shit productivity = less earnings. As a boss, you need to compromise. Its the small things like that that make the biggest different to morale.

very true! we are learning all about employer-employee relationships at the moment, all about managing people, motivating them, workplace morale, efficiency etc and getting the most out of employees. doing stuff like that really helps keep people on side and keep them happy

I couldn't stand to work in such a place 'dam... I'm not all about getting a big head or wanting attention for the work I do, but getting treated with respect is just as important as giving it. Your boss sounds like a wanker.

Well it is a privilege to have a job, don't feel too entitled! but at the same time, if the boss has ANY idea how to run a small business he will understand that when you only have a few employees who bust their guts for you, you HAVE to give something back (such as the case you noted above, for an hour, shit that shouldn't even be a thing, should be just told to go do what they need to do!) As shaz pointed out, unhappy employees = shit.
It would be different if the person was a habitual sicky taker who slacked off and was late all the time, that would be a completely different story!
