If the noise goes away with the clutch in, I would say get the spigot bearing that sits in the flywheel changed. Only painful part is that the box needs to come out for that... :(

Nice find though. 2k is a nice price, despite the head gasket issues.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

I dropped in to NRG Automotive today for an expert opinion on the gearbox noise, looks like it needs to come out and replace one or two bearings. They are happy for me to remove the box myself, bring it in and help split it and replace the bearings to keep costs at an absolute minimum. At this stage I'm thinking of just putting up with the noise for a bit longer, maybe I can put up with it until I purchase the half cut or salvage wrx.

Today's purchase should help as you can't hear it with the stereo turned up anyway :D

how did they determine where the noise was coming from? i have exaxtly the same issue as you. mine goes in on the 17th to be looked at.

Have you put any more thought into squeezing some more power out of the engine. Like strapping on one of those intake fans

Just took a listen to it, they have a lot of experience with Subarus there. They don't think it was coming from the back end of the box since nothing should be turning back there in neutral, so the box has to come out.

Let me know what they say about yours.

And it'll be enough to get through your entire car?

Thanks man.

I was told all four doors and a few sheets left over, obviously you can use more or less. I will just target less rigid areas with whatever is left over once the doors are done.

Less than an hour with my battery powered rattle gun. Cleaning will take me a lot longer though!

Ha ha, I bet. Best of luck with it. Hopefully you don't find any bad "surprises". I'll be waiting for the pics!

Great effort! I'd love to see how much is underneath all of my seats and carpet... I doubt it'd be that much though. One of the highest hauls I've seen. :P

Hi Guys,

As you know I have had some noise coming from the Outback's gearbox after we put the motor back in for the head gasket change. Anyway today I dropped out the gearbox and have some photos to show.

Its a different looking clutch setup to my wrx so I'm not sure how it should look but I think the bearing is rubbing on the pressure plate as you can see from the photos its all polished from the rubbing and I bet this is creating the noise I am hearing.

Any help please?

The bearing spins, wouldn't say it feels brand new but it still spins. Also I can move the pressure plate back and forth about 2mm with it still bolted to the back of the motor.

Is it one of those dual mass clutches in this car?

Spigot bearing is very notchy, can't see the bolts to remove the flywheel.

Nice one.

can't see the bolts to remove the flywheel.

Is it one of those dual mass clutches in this car?

It is a dual mass, that's why you cant see the bolts.

If you cant rotate the clutch side of the flywheel to get to the bolts, just separate the flywheel.

I suggest while you have it in bits, fit a single mass conversion kit. That dual mass setup is the work of Satan.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
