Gary the "story" has been about for a little while. Florentino Perez first mentioned it in Marca at the start of June talking about Ronaldo, his injury and playing in the tournament at all and what he was risking. The day of the first Portugal game Dr Noronha (the knee surgeon who treats most of the big name football players) made a comment via the press saying that he needs at least two months off to rest his ACL or risks doing more damage and that the injury could become career ending which Ronaldo basically scoffed at and basically said he knows when he can play and when he can't.
Obviously Madrid are following the story closely and have put pressure on Ronaldo himself but as always with club v country are leaning pretty hard on the FPF to make sure he doesn't play if he isn't match fit. Madrid as a football juggernaut and global brand have a board whose objective is to protect their best interest which includes the fitness of their players, product they're able to deliver their members and fans and commitment to their commercial partners to deliver the most desirable product possible. They have ways to make it very awkward for the PFP if they don't at least look to be coming to the party. Madrid as a brand would rather there was no World Cup.
