Cooling was carried out by cycling fuel behind the titanium surfaces in the chines.

 

So, they used fuel, to cool the engines. 

 

Crazy. I was also reading that they pissed out jet fuel on the runway because they were put together losely to allow the metal to expand when warmed up, which then sealed it all.
