When I had a computer desk (have everything in storage now)... I had a set of Swan M50W with a 'Brik' DAC (connected with SPDIF), it was a package deal from MyAV. I really liked them. It's a powered 2.1 set, has plenty of punch. Great for games and all types of music. You don't have to connect this to a DAC, it just has a headphone jack for the input - but you'll probably get better sound quality if you move the audio output away from the onboard soundcard. Some boards are prone to noise.
I had a Logitech Z5500 5.1 set prior. I actually still have it, but the control pod is dead. If you like loud, but don't care much about sound range, the bigger Logitech sets are easy fixes.
