Closer to finalising everything now after doing some research on parts, performance and looking at how they stack against each other on numerous spec comparison sites. An overclocked i5 for example can still meet the performance of an i7, plus it saves me some money to spend in other areas. Here's what I've got now;

  • CPU - Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($332.00)
  • CPU Cooler - Corsair H60 74.4 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($92.00)
  • Motherboard - Asus Z170I PRO GAMING Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard ($269.00)
  • Memory - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 ($129.00)
  • Storage - Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($205.00)
  • Video Card - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Windforce OC ($699.00)
  • Case - Fractal Design Define Nano S Mini ITX Desktop Case ($125.00)
  • Power Supply - Corsair CSM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX ($152.00)
  • Monitor - Asus VX248H 24.0" 60Hz Monitor ($239.00)

  • Total Cost - $2,242.00

I haven't yet decided on what mechanical keyboard or mouse to go for which seem to be the only things missing from the list. Hoping I can get some decent coin for my iMac.

Wanting to buy/looking for: single genuine STi rim, genuine STi front lip, Corazon or Zero/Sports grille and another OEM grille

I like Corsair mech keyboards (cherry reds (light, no click) if your playing games, blues (heavy-ish, clicky) if your typing a lot and browns (in between, clicky) for a bit of both). Got a K70 RGB with reds on mine, K70 with reds on the wife/kids and a K60 with reds at work.

Plus the warranty/RMA is awesome for Corsair stuff.

Mouse, it depends on your hand, takes a while to get used to different types (height, length, width, weight), maybe go into a shop and just get a feel for them. But pay around $80 and you'll get a good mouse.

I lean towards Steelseries (have 3, want another...).

Oooo where has this thread been hiding..

I've started gaming a little on what was to be a work laptop. Its a gigabyte p35 I believe, which a GeForce GTX 765 card, 16gb Ram and an i7, can't remember which one.

Decent thing, able to play skyrim and COD Black Ops 2 without a problem.

Was looking to build a decent setup with the GTX 1060, but total cost was quite a bit, so maybe another time.

Oh, and as for a mouse, I have the logitech 402. Wanted the 502, but no stock, and the 402 was on sale, so it did the job

+1 for Corsair Mech keyboards, they are awesome.

For mouse, I've always been a fan of Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum.

Yeah mad. That's the exact one my mate told me to get. Pretty sure he has one himself too. Seems like a Corsair mechanical keyboard and Logitech mouse is the way to go.

What games are you getting into Sackery?

Nice. I was actually given a link to check out some Corsair mechanical keyboards. They look awesome. Never knew about the cherries either until I did some research so I think I'll go with the browns to get the best of both worlds.

True. A mate has recommended the Logitech G502 but did actually mention going into a shop to give them a feel before buying.

Been playing Skyrim quite a bit, I was a fan of Oblivion.

Will play COD BlackOps2 when I want to shoot stuff up.

Also got Mad Max, for the fun of it.

@Shaz, I wanted a 502, but the originals were discontinued, and I don't care for the RGB ones, so just got a 402.

Once I get a PC, I might get a mech keyboard, but for now, laptop keyboard it is

Put together a build earlier, thoughts?

Mostly gunna be used for gaming, but popped in an i7 for better video rendering / streaming as well.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/gL93Z8

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($478.99 @ Mwave Australia)
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($97.90 @ Newegg Australia)
  • Motherboard: MSI B150I GAMING PRO AC Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($179.00 @ Mwave Australia)
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($249.00 @ IJK)
  • Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($122.00 @ IJK)
  • Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($68.00 @ CPL Online)
  • Video Card: MSI Radeon RX 480 8GB Video Card  ($419.00 @ Umart)
  • Case: NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($109.00 @ Centre Com)
  • Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($129.00 @ CPL Online)
  •
  •
  • Total: $1851.89

At a cross roads. On one hand, I'm thinking about going in to the next Playstation 4 NEO + PS VR (Pending specs being released 7th Sept) or the above build. Would love a GTX1080 but not willing to fork out $1k+ for a video card. I think this RX480 will be good for what I need, and for future proofing. I think the new GTX 1060 might be a slightly better card with a similar price point, but lacks in DX12 performance when against the 480, which I think alot of newer games coming out will run.

All looks good to me. Agree with your theory on 480 vs 1060. If you plan on saving a lot of video you may want a bigger hard drive but it's easy to do later any way. You all make me want to upgrade my old pc. It will probably struggle with the new games coming out soon.

What about going in the middle for the graphics card to get a GTX 1070 like me? $700 and should last the next couple of years at the very least. I thought I'd spend the money now and benefit from it.

To be honest, the amount of performance for price isn't worth it IMO Gaz.

Also, alot of the Nvidia stuff gets outdated really quickly (Look at the GTX970). The benefit to the RX480 is that if needed, they accept SLi so you can add a second card to get performance up there with a GTX1080 in crossfire.

That's a fair argument. I'm getting ever so close to making my purchase so I'll be doing a bit more research before putting pen to paper. So far my build is around the same mark give or take $50 (a few of the items I've got on my list have dropped in price slightly).

What antivirus are people using nowadays? I've been using AVG on my laptop for years now but am wondering if there are other better options. Avira looks to be like a good contender.
