hey guys, looking at upgrading my liberty when i get off my p's
here are a couple of cars ive been looking at on carsales etc,
just looking for some honest opinions

http://www.carsales..../?Cr=55&sdmvc=1
this one looks good and seems in good condition but thats a tonne of km's?

http://www.carsales..../?Cr=32&sdmvc=1
again this wrx still has more kms than my 98 lib,

http://www.carsales..../?Cr=68&sdmvc=1
this one is my favourite of the three

also im not really looking to modify the engine too a great extent and basically just wanting a fast daily car all of your opinions would help me out a tonne

if you are going to get a bug, try get an MY02 there were a few decent changes (like 4.44 ratio gearbox which is 100x better than the 3.9 in my01) as well as internal antenna.

ps if you havent driven one before, leave it stock. tonnes of power straight out of the box get used to it first

what would be a reasonable amount of kms on a my02? ive seen a couple with over 250,000 and that seems like a tonne to me

way too much @ 12.5k for a 12 year old turbo subaru IMO.

whatever you do don't rush into buying one. I've had several high km subaru (inc wrx) in my family and haven't had any issues. KM are just a general rule when buying a car, but if it has been properly looked after it will be fine.

what they are listed at and what they actually sell for are to totally different things

Have you put any more thought into squeezing some more power out of the engine. Like strapping on one of those intake fans

Just remember you will be buying an older car and you will have to look for telltale signs for a well cared for car.

You will probably need to have a feel of the box, check if the shifter is sloppy if it is then bushes will need to be replaced  ~ $ 200

Steering it should be smooth and shouldn't pull back, if the steering is sluggish or sloppy and not smooth in the turn  ~ powersteering pump ~ up to 700 for a rebuild i believe, I haven't done mine yet then there will be a cost for steering bushes ( Can a forum member update this will a more accurate price and pricing for steering bushes )

Anti lift kit and strut bushes for sway bar and links I believe was up to ~300 for a kit then the price for labour. These should be eyeballed when inspecting.

Check CV boots to make sure its in good nick and no grease is leaking.

Make sure the engine is purring along, no white smoke after then engine has idled for a good 20 minutes is warm.

Check radiator fluid to make sure there is no oil film inside.

Check engine bay for any oil around seals.

Check for the usual rust and irregular weld joints.

Check all the panels to make sure everything absolutely lines up, if anything doesn't check the interior and question it as it was most likely in a stack.

Turn on the car check the radio and lights for flickering or radio static, if there is then you've probably got some sort of electrical troubelshooting to do which can be quite a bit of $$$.

look under the driver steering collumn thing and passenger, wires should be tucked away and neat. If its all messed up then question the seller as it probably had aftermarket parts all over it and was returned to stock standard - things may not be working right.

I'd take someone I know who knows their way around a car. I would also take alexxx's advice in not jumping the gun and making a purchase. Watch the market and see what pops up. If you impulse buy, you'll only find that a better deal has popped up only a few days later. You'll kick yourself.

Probably the best advice anyone would be able to give you if you haven't been around the bush buying 2nd hand cars.

100%. I am not a noob with cars, but I'm no pro either and there's always something new to learn. I'd even bring along someone now if I was to buy another car in all honesty.

What's your budget and what do you want out of it?

High km's don't mean crap, if it's been looked after.

Especially on country/freeway cars, as they don't get the same engine wear and tear city cars get from the constant stop-start.

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

I read not that long ago on here (maybe a few months) that if you look around you can find a Bug STi for 15-16k and you get bonuses like Brembos, 6sp and R180.

My advice is save a little more and buy an STI if you can. It ends up being cheaper in the long run.

budgeting up to 13k could potentially go 15k, definitely not rushing into anything as i have over 6 months tip I'm off my p's anyway so i couldn't drive it until then anyway,

just looking for a fast daily, though needs to be reliable as id be using it for work as well

I'd recommend either an XT Forester or GT Liberty.

The ones in that price bracket are in better nick than most WRXs of the same.

XT's have basically the same engine and internals as the 06/07 WRX (2.5).

Libertys are a little different but still cool. I'd have bought one if my forester didn't come up when I was looking!
