http://smh.drive.com.au/motor-news/140kmh-safer-in-australia-safety-expert-20101011-16fer.html drive faster bitches!

Haha, gotta love ze Chermans!

As much as we would all love that - the truth is that Australian motorists aren't ready to be permitted to drive at that speed. Our lack of lane discipline and general mediocre driving standards mean it would be carnage on our motorways/freeways if we could drive at 140km/h+. Thats the reality.

:(

Out of a town a bit and in rural areas it could work well though!

140 would be sweet for the B4, has anyone else noticed that the B4 doesn't like sitting on 110? The primary tends to drag it up a little bit to 120ish or more?

Or is that just my weird car?

Nah mate my B4 does exactly that, It is true Australian drivers are shithouse tailgaters - I don't tailgate because it is a pet hate of mine.. I want to cause physical agony to people who do it to me....

I really really can't stand it.

The worst is tailgaters behind you with shit cars, because you know the don't have the braking power to stop either! let alone the reaction time!

Also, i hate tailgaters with kids in the car, or with "baby-on-board" stickers.

I hate baby on board stickers full stop - gayest Idea ever... like I care if there is a baby on board? I am not going to endanger any one any more just because there is not a baby on board.

Only problem with trucks being limited to 80-90km/h is the time at which a car going at 140km/h gains on them. I usually sit on about 115-120km/h on the freeway as I do it daily and even L plates come up way to fast and if an unobservant driver comes up behind a truck whilst doing 140, it could cause problems. Because they will be in the wrong lane.

Aussie drivers just need more training, to be more aware of whats happening around them and more forgiving. Someone might merge in front of you. Big deal, you get to your destination an extra 5secs later.

Problem there is that roads "out of town" generally aren't be safe @140+ for 90% of car's out there AND country roads have alot more trees and shit to hit and are never devided.... freeways usually perfect road surface, devided and no big trees and shit to hit....

Just need 3 lane roads all around Aus with different limits per lane.
Main freeways with a limit of 140 and other roads obviously limited according to condition and surroundings

I think it should be (with the correct driver training):

L platers & trucks? - 100km/h
Red P's - 110
Green P's - 120
Full - unrestricted (140?)

On from the rural areas having a higher speed, ask anyone that actually lives out here and we'll tell you FUCK NO. Any rural area has two major problems, complacency at speed from us locals, and tourists that usually catch the bus to work in the city have a few days off and remember they have a car so they drive it down here and try to kill everyone with it.

Roos are evil too. I sit below the speed limit at d/d.

Really if everyone had 1/2 a fucken brain we wouldn't need speed limits full stop.

I drive how ever fast I feel like but I have rules that I follow that keep me and everyone else safe...

ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

Keep it reasonable when passing other cars.

Anticipate what the other drivers going to do.

ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

NEVER take up more than your 1/2 of the road unless you can see for 500m.

ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

Go as fast as you can round cnrs IN YOUR LANE (unless you can see atleast 500m up road past cnr exit).

ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

Never TRY to push the car TO IT'S LIMIT.

ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

I agree on all of those points. I pushed my Forester to it's limits and nearly died, so I can't say I've always been smart about it. I have said for years that driver training should involve a major crash in which the licence hopeful is driving. Some might die, sure, that's a down side, but all in all we would have much safer roads.

Well. Did you expect the cheese?

Roo shoo's are a menace to society, they ring so loud in my ears I hate it. I can feel it all the way down the back of my neck.

Bahahahahahaha.... had to quote that one. so true! alot of qlders come down here for the "tourist drives" and it's pitiful watching them try to drive on these roads, plus they make it almost impossible to overtake as they've never seen a side of a road without kerbing so they drive in the middle of a road thats only 2 1/2 car widths wide at it best... and at at 40km/h.... and they NEVER pull over and let you past even when there's heaps of space on the side of road.

Buzz forgot one small rule on his list, when you see a kilometre of straight road, smash the piss out of that thing until the engine blows up, and through corners, don't worry about speed limits - you'll know you've gone too fast when your sway bars fall off.
