Apparently tap them, if they 'ring' then they are forged, if they 'thud' they are cast.

FYI if you type [.media]youtubelinkhere[./media] without the full stops, you will auto embed the video. Awesome feature. Also, that guys voice is the most annoying thing I have heard all day. I want him to stop.

anyways, 612 dollars for a new clock spring from brisbane city subaru.. jeeebus... i was saving for the new gearbox.. oh well.

And I thought $92 was expensive for a fuel filter, O rings and a can of UEC!!!
$612, no luck with the wreckers?

you'd be able to do that while their in the block then wouldn't you? I honestly can't see why an na ej25 would have forgies, but he could maybe be teling the truth? Just because his ideas on modifying a car are ridiculously stupid that doesn't make him a liar. Meh lol.

Auto electrician called around a couple wreckers. no luck. Al nearly had a 2nd one, but turned out to be for a newer model liberty with different sensors.
Problem with 2nd-hand clock springs, they may have been rotated incorrectly/played with and they can break very easily. I know its a complete rip off and im normally pretty stingy but when it comes down to it, i'll cough up and pay exorbitant prices to know the air bags will work during an accident to "potentially" save a life. Id never want to find myself in a position where the airbags didnt go off, someone was hurt and then ask myself was it because i stinged for such a vital component for the airbag system.

end rant.

edit update. *trying with a local mate who works at subaru. fingers crossed.*

Not sure that would work. The 'ring' would be transferred into the surrounding metal.

Me and the Mrs are looking at going on holidays Feb 2010 up to the Gold Coast at this stage looking at driving up with the B4 (to have the car while we are up there etc.) Accomodation is already sorted as the girlfriends grandparents have an appartment up there that is only used for a couple of months a year (with a garage) Just a couple of questions: 1. What do i do about 98 ron fuel? I assume its not avaliable at some petrol stations along the way? (let me know if it is?) or is 91 or 95 ron plus an additive alright just while cruising at 100/110? 2. Stone chips - should i be worried about these? as in, should i buy some sort of car bra or protective film? Cheers :drinks:

Every fuel station from melb to syd had 98, and I have talked to a few people who have done the trip from adelaide to brisbane and they have said there was always 98 available. As far as i know it is fairly standard on major highways etc...Which leads to what roads you are taking? In my experience stone chips haven't been an issue, but I have not done the trip you are taking. Hope this helps, cheers Jesse

I agree.
Cant be a tightass with safety.

I tried to explain this to a mate today.
I test drove a CLK430 Benz that he is looking at buying. It needs 2 tyres on the front. As its from a dealer, I suggested he offer to pay the difference and upgrade to a quality tyre rather that going with the rubbish the car yard would use.
His response was 'Woulnt make any difference. Its a safe car already'. :dash2:

Stone chip heaven on my front bar... driving from brissy to coffs a couple times.. All the decent sized towns will have it like, tweed heads, coffs harbour, ballina. They all have 98ron. finding 98 ron between ballina and woolgoolga can be a bit dodgy though.

What way do you drive from Bris to Coffs? Have you tried Lions Road? Really good driving road, nice country and lots of bends. Where abouts do you get the stonechips?

Cheers

Yeah, if you're sticking to major highways should have no problems, but as Richo said grab a couple of jerry cans if you are worried.
