It's a type of encryption to tell one device what the other device is...to try and stop someone just burning the bluray disc.

ie. bluray player asks the other device (over the HDMI cable) "what are you". It replies with "im a samsung something something tv" and the bluray player continues sending the signal. If it was to reply "i'm a bluray disc reader/writer" then it would not transmit the message or would do it in a different way.

Yes, but some disc's won't play if they can't verify it's a TV they're talking to....hence HDCP becomes important.

Also, 3d content (i believe) does not work unless it can verify it's talking to a tv.
