About 10-12 years ago, dad bought our first brand new TV. An NEC 51cm CRT thing and it was awesome! Since then we've inherited, been given and bought only second hand TVs when the old ones break. They've all been very basic...
However, I bought a brand new 40" LED TV on the weekend and it has all these HDMI ports at the back. The only things I plug into our TV are DVD player, Wii and the old N64. Do any of these use HDMI?

Here's a stupid question. What exactly does an HDMI cable do?

No.
Hdmi is generally used to transfer things in HD - Blu Ray, XBox ps3. E.t.c
Don't pay $50-$300 for one.
