Going to do the 1 day course here through HART (Honda accredited rider training). They are rated one of the best, so it should be good. Also they say if you fail, you get 1 free re-test on the day.

 

That's where I did mine. HART in St Ives.

Being a bike rider has made me more aware on the road in general. I reckon it has made me a better driver.

How does the license thing work here, Gaz. Do I need my own helmet and shit for the test/Ls course?

 

The only thing you need to have by law in NSW is a helmet. However, when doing the test I would recommend jeans, closed shoes, gloves and a proper riding jacket or leather jacket. You will be given a list of what they recommend you wear anyway. They are really strict on helmets as well, so seeing as you need to buy one, you may as well fork out a bit of extra money to get one you like and one that you will have for a long time. You must NEVER remove the Australian Standard sticker (it's a silver holographic type sticker). Ever. Never ever. Otherwise you won't be able to continue with the rider course and/or you can be fined by police.

 

Get your L's, which you obtain after doing a test at the RMS, then go out and buy your gear. Rent/buy a bike in the meantime just to get the hang of things and then you can book for the test.

 

There is a pre-learners test (practical). You have to pass it before you go to the RMS.

 

RMS is a theory test (same as your L's in a car).

 

Pretty sure you have to have your L's for a minimum of 6 months then you can take your P's test. That's the full day course (you see them riding around in their yellow vests!)

 

If you're over 25 and have a full drivers licence, you can go straight to your full riders licence otherwise there is a green P's step.

 

Can't remember what is actually involved to get your full licence.

 

That's 100% correct. And I go from my red P's straight to my full license when I book in for my full license.

 

So, another date with 'potential' tomorrow.

I don't remember them providing gear for us. My memory of the day is fuzzy though as I did it in VERY poor weather. It was pissing down raining and I was absolutely drenched. The only thing that wasn't wet was my head. At least the helmet is waterproof.

 

Oh wait, I think I'm mixing up my L's and biker testing to get your P's... If it's for the L's, then yes, you are right Ash.
