I've never done one in an auto. So I've never dealt with tranny cooler lines.

 

Why are they tricky? Are they easy to block off, remove and re-connect? 

. 

There's just enough room to undo the hose clamps. If you cant get the hoses off you will have to cut the hose and replace.

 

If you get them off just stick a bolt in the hoses, and don't start the car haha (projectile bolt)

Wait, how does the trans cooler work then?

I thought it was just normal coolant that ran through that as well to cool the gearbag down.

The atf fluid runs through a different part of the rad. you will loose fluid when the lines are off

 

i think the air flow cools the atf fluid not the coolant

Some radiators use a sealed lower end tank for the transmission, which means it would use the coolant as a heat sink.

No worries. 
I'll stock up on tranny fluid when I get some coolant.

(I have my workshop manual, I have this shit sorted) ;)
