I'm gonna go check this place out on Tuesday with one of the guys from work, he wants a similar bike to me.

These guys have all the different Yamaha XVS's that I like.

So... I went out checking bikes...
I think I'm just going to get a 250cc... I know it is small and not as much power as a 500, but good price, and I feel a little better on the smaller bike...
I sat on a GS500F, and it was good, but too expensive for me... the ones I can find anyway...
Tomorrow I'm going to check out a nice black 2012 Ninja 250 I found, and if I like it, I'll put a deposit on it...

Hey AMSy, what do you think about a 2005 GS500F?
Would you go for it over a 2012 Ninja 250?

I made an informed decision and bought a gs500f over a ninja 250. It's just a better bike.
For a first bike I would much rather something I'm not as worried about dropping, like a 8 year old bike.

Wait until you fall off a few times.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Adam,
I don't want to scare you, or anyone else, but the numbers indicate you will most likely fall off.
Just make sure you have the right gear and always use it to stand the best chance.
I only had one off where I couldn't pick up the bike and keep going (bent forks, smashed instruments, shattered fairings), all the others were just a dust off and some duct tape when I got home.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

I would like to point out also, don't take Jase's comment as negative, in fact far from it.
If you have the mentality that "it will never happen to me" then good luck to you.
I would rather be safe, so correct gear as said above is a must.
Not pointing fingers, that's directed at everyone.

Zac, my mate had the ninja and said it was uncomfortable over long distance. Food for thought. Also Ams had a very valid point.

I got cleaned up by a bike doing 80 when I was a lad. 8 weeks in hospital and months in rehab learning to walk again. Not to mention I have lost 3 mates on bikes so there is a lot of fear on my part as far as riding goes. I think it's just one of those things you have to be prepared for the worse and keep your wits about you or the consequences are extreme.

Very much true.
I know I'm a pretty cautious rider but never underestimate the stupidity of humans.
Live by this rule and it'll give you the best chance at having a happy riding life.

That sucks to hear Josh, but honestly, the more of these stories the better I say.
A guy I used to work with (works at a different JB now) thought he was invincible after only riding a few months, other mates (whom I know from other employment) are experienced riders. Old mate wanted to keep up on a notorious stretch of road and came off, extremely lucky to have survived.
I got the best advice from an experienced rider yesterday: Let the experienced guys do what they want, and you take your time. They will still be there when you get to the next stop.
