If I already have a GD rack and swap in a GD sti/spec c rack, I think I can disconnect the lines at the crossmember/rack and stick in the new one. It's only when crossing generations that you get incompatible rack/lines/pump scenarios from what I've seen.

If you have the GD knuckle from the column the rest can be made to do as needed as far as I'm aware

Anyway, torqued to spec is just the manuals way of saying 'we couldn't get it any tighter, see if you can'.

It's more about getting the lines back into he rack I think. Access is limited with the up pipe and shit in the way

Engine bay looks less embarrassment after a second coat

Once it hardens I'll wet sand and put down a couple more coats. When looking into this "painting car with foam brush" thing it was mentioned that the first couple coats should be so thin you can still see through it.

Firewall will be covered in heat shielding - http://www.carbuilde.../zero-clearance - to keep heat and noise out of the cabin but more importantly to disguise the firewall modification in case RTA are in a particularly bad mood that day.

Yar 2 months, I've been slack.

copypasta of an update posted on ozfoz----------------
12_trans-in.jpg

13_bulkhead.jpg

New whiteline and perrin rubbers throughout gearbox mount and shifter. Dismantled/cleaned/regreased the shifter ball, replaced all the non-steel shifter parts for minimal sloppage.

Firewall was a bit ugly after welding, decided to line it with this stuff - http://www.carbuilde.../zero-clearance . Good gear, would bang again. Firewall and start of trans tunnel all lined, should do a top job of keeping heat out of the cabin on long drives with frequent stops. Sealed all edges and overlaps with HD sikaflex seam sealant, including the new holes for GD heater core.

Bulkhead loom mostly in, heater box fits perfect, blower box fits fine (just needs a mounting bar to account for GC/GD differences), engine room wiring all loosely fitted, will hold off attaching to chassis for now.

Have now overcome the majority of the sf|gc to GD differences, so it's mostly assembly. Still have to do the timing belt, water pump, idlers etc before the engine's ready to go in, but there are heaps of jobs in the engine bay that are easier with no motor in the way.

------------------

...and since I did that I've been too busy fixing up our house and travelling back and forth to QLD.
Drove back last time in our new eurotrash #wagonlyfe.

vw.jpg

So damned comfortable and easy to drive. Picked it up and did 2125km solo over 3 days - gold coast > byron > newcastle > canberra > kosciuszko > central vic, with easily 200kg+ of tools. Up the steepest bits it would happily do 120km/h in 6th at 2200rpm. Also did some easy offroad tracks to test traction and descent control. Too much computer magic for my liking but does what it says on the tin so that's ok.

Foz is now officially on hold until our house is on the market. Then I'll do timing belt etc, stick in engine, and trailer it to a a cement-floor garage so i can stop trying to build a car in the mud.
