you said yrself that you don't know what ping is... read a few articles about B4's, try to find ONE that says the factory top mount is sufficient... you won't!! THE FACTORY TOP MOUNT INTERCOOLER IS SHIT! THE END

I hear what your saying Walts, and I completely agree that our cars PROBABLY will be safe during summer with the tunes we have. BUT- a new TMIC is on the cards for me before the end of this year. Dunno if you owned your B4 during an Adelaide February (where Adelaide seems to get at least 5-10 days over 40degrees EVERY FEB these days!) But Im not keen to "see if it lasts"!!

My strong recommendation to you is if you are not keen to get a bigger TMIC, then PLEASE get a CAI. Preferably a Hyperflow (cause they are awesome!) but it doesn't have to be. Even with the tune and not thrashing it, those are some SERIOUSLY HOT intake temps on a 40degree day with a stock intake and cooler, just think heat soak at the traffic lights. :diablo:

For me I don't give two hoots if I get 0.00001 KW gain out of a new TMIC, its all about keeping the detonation away in summer!! Id rather spend $1000 on my own terms rather than 4-5K with a rebuild when I dont choose to!

can I get a halelujah! Amen to that!

Who cares about your bumper, just cut it up and put a front mount, looks and sounds heaps better :D . Apart from that, there's no heatsoak or loss of performance after sitting at the lights, and less ping. Drove it in 28ish degree temps on the weekend, after sitting at the lights it would ping if i floored it. But this time with the front, no ping :yahoo: and no drop in performance from when it was colder. Now i know nothing about upgraded top mounts, but i now know how pathetic the stock cooler is. Just look at the size of the core, no wonder the air doesn't cool down. Atleast think about a water spray system, maybe fifty bucks or so. (if your willing to use bunnings gardening supplies on you car like me :) )
If it's broke use a cable tie.

you need to see figures of intake temps before you go making any decisions... with romraider software + tactrix cable you can get live readouts of all the vitals of the car. i've just changed the cooler on my wrx and it made a HUGE difference.

I did a fair bit of research on the pro's/con's of both before deciding to go TM. from what I've read/heard aftermarket TM will still suffer from "heat soak" when sitting in traffic etc,
I only went with TM (instead of FM) cos where I am traffic isn't bad (have 1 set of lights in town) and most of the hard driving I do is out woop woop so TM gets plenty of fresh cool air then anyway and its easy to install (keep d/lights).
if I was in a city and had to deal with lights and traffic I would def go FM.

Those intercoolers on the pig eyed rex's are tiny! Even smaller than the B4 (or look smaller anyway)

Do you have a before and after shot alex?

yes i'm pretty sure he had a multimeter hooked up to a thermocouple when doing the temp testing.

FYI this cooler is proven to handle over 240 awkw. (who needs front mount :D)

that should be enough to make you want one

the H/flow one looks pretty much exactly the same, you can actually see it thr the scoop.

Black also transfers heat better than bare aluminium so it basically is cancelled out.
