Hi,

It was one of the main reasons I bought the car, not something I learned to live with after purchase.

It is probably more for your sophisticated clientelle.

From what info I can find there is a 10% Customs Duty fee applied to the Purchase Price or Customs Landed Value (who knows how they value it). You add that 10% to the price/value which gives you a subtotal, then apply another 10% GST to that subtotal.

For example:
Lets buy this 2000 Legacy B4 for $6,563:

If the customs duty is applied to the purchase price, then;
$6,563 x 10% = $656.30

Purchase Price ($6,563) plus Customs Duty ($656.30) equals subtotal: $7219.30

Subtotal ($7219.30) x GST 10% = $721.93

Subtotal ($7219.30) plus GST ($721.93) Equals $7941.23

In this example you end up paying $1378.23 extra and that would be minimum. If they decide the Landed Value is more than the Purchase Price then it could only cost you more. How much more? I don't know... probably worth paying an import agent to do all the red tape for you and get everything right the first time....
I'd like to think you'd still end up in front though....

Wish there was someone on here that had done it and fill in the blanks...
Sorry for the ramble, just wanted to post what little info I found.
*edit: Shipping would be an extra $1000 minimum as well.

Hi,

But if they decide that there is an equivalent car being sold here in Australia by the manufacturer then your only option is private import I think you'll find.

That's why the blokes that have brought in STi Forester's had to own them for a year over there first, or bring them in as a donor car and swap everything to an ADM model Forester.

Cheers,
Nik

Nope!! But I've seen a B4 RSK model for sale in Australia..... Don't know what they had to do to get it here mind you.

I didn't find much about the legalities, only what it costs. The Mighty Mods boys made it look really simple in that video - "Buy a car, send it over in a couple of weeks = Sweet!!"
Hope they dig into the nitty gritty of what's involved in their next episode(s).
And you'd think everyone would be doing it if it was really that easy....

They had to own it in their name for a year in another country, prove they had been living there for a significant amount of that year, and then import it privately.

Hmm, using their cost calculator, the same B4 as listed above for $6563 would cost $14300 for them to bring it in.
Includes:
FOB Fee: $1176
IM service fee: $990
Import Duty: $750
GST: $825
Telegraphic Transfer fee: $35
Shipping / Wharf / Customs fees: $2000
Compliance fee: $2200

Does not include Shipping Insurance!

So, $14300 - Is that what you'd expect to pay for a 2000 B4 with 80,000 KMs on the clock??? or perhaps a little less??

Hi, I wouldn't be parting with anymore than 13k for an MY00. Cheers, Nik Also that shipping fee is crazy, I can get an entire sea freight container from Milan to Fremantle for $2,400!

Yeah, the TradeCarView shipping calculator put roll on roll off at $1000, but container loaded at $2000.
The question would be: How much are Wharf and customs fees?

edit: At the end of the day, wouldn't you expect to pay a little more for the exclusivity of a JDM spec vehicle??

Hi, Not really. Depends how much **** factor you can really afford. I never once used the Japanese sat nav system, nor the folding mirrors, colour coded handles was nice (on the Foz) but B4's had this anyway, 180k dash is annoying when you're on the main straight at the longer Australian tracks, also for some small, stupid things, you will find the parts are different. For example, my lower radiator hose was a different shape to the Aus. delivered due to the climate control (oh yer, that was nice too!) - so it took 6 weeks to source from Nippon. Most need to be retuned for Aussie fuel too, so add $1k on for that aswell. Then you have to get it registered, which involves at least hitting the pits. Cheers, Nik

Mmm, I think weeze would know mr Alex, yes, JDM car for more than 8 years, track work, super sprints, general hard use all on 96 and then 98 RON fuel, current V4 STi engine even runs shit hot on hot days thanks to the advanced JDM intake air temp sensor which constantly adjusts the ECU to compensate for outside air temp (lucky it's not AUDM), 38 today and full boost no pinging with a/c on, just ask Dylan :-) Regards PAul

Hi, Nah mate, it was about 5 years ago now, don't have anything left to prove to your gearset. Sorry! Though to be fair I think it might have been running an aftermarket ECU when I first bought it. It was a weird car, details sketchy. Carry on. Cheers, Nik
