I drive like a grandpa and have averaged 12.21L/100km since last November. It's mostly short trips, 5-8km max. The iPhone Road Trip LE app logs the start/end km, fuel price, how many litres you put in etc... But I get to go to Noosa tomorrow for work, a 100km round trip, so I'm expecting this fortnight's fuel usage to be significantly better.

Buzzda, F*CK ME!. MY SS is getting .8ltr/100 worse consumption! Something is seriously amis there. All you NA fella's, just use the $1.30 ULP, PULP will just sting you 20c more. It will make absolutly no difference to your car at all. what so ever, end of story.

its 14c a litre more in NSW.

if you read the manual it states minimum RON should be 95 for the RX. My old wagon said that...

Wrong.
After always using 95/98 in the RX, mum used my car and filled it up with 91.
There was a obvious difference - even after one tank.

maybe in a commodore. generally speaking if the folks who designed and built the car write it in the manual i'd say its a good idea to do it.

It makes plenty of difference, I can even notice the difference between 95 and 98. Which is why I almost always use 98 and if its not available I use 95. I've tried a couple of tanks of 91 and you can feel the loss in power and the odometer doesn't lie when I fall about 50-70km short compared to 98!

Who's putting 95RON into their car??? That's the ethanol shit and Subaru doesn't recommend using it AT ALL. 98 will see some gains in fuel economy over prolonged use. If you're swapping from 91RON, your intial two or three tanks will see worse economy than the 91, but the car will adjust to it over time, with economy improving to wait for it... similar results to the 91RON.. There is no point in swapping RON from tank to tank, it's just going to mess with the computer and give you shitty economy and false results. I've just switched back to 91 and so far it's delivering slightly less economy than the 98 (expected due to the change while the computer adjusts), but it's a pretty negligable difference. Oh, there's no difference in performance either. It's an NA 2.5 wagon, so as if I would notice a difference right?? If you really want to test it out, go for four full tanks of 98, then go for four full tanks of 91. Record the results and tell us what you find. Experiments are fun.

i think there is a little confusion of what the octane rating of fuel actually is. octane rating is the fuels RESISTANCE TO KNOCKING. for those who don't know what knocking is, it is the pre-ignition of fuel mixture in an uncontrolled manor, rather than being burned. the exploding reaction is what will kill an engine. THEREFORE if your car's manual tells you to use a certain rating fuel ITS A PRETTY GOOD IDEA TO! knocking will KILL your engine, there's no beating around the bush here. if you choose to use 98 octane over 91 then good freaking on you your doing your car a favour!!! edit: without going into too much detail, the reason you want higher octane in a car (especially when tuning) is the ability to run a more advanced ignition timing. if your knock sensor detects knock in your motor it will retard the timing, hence CUTTING POWER! so if you want your car running at its best, use a higher octane fuel. btw. knock sensor isn't going to 100% protect your motor. from studies i have read one good bit of knocking in your motor can kill it instantly.
