Stalling Auto
#1

on the first trip of the day... and at the same spot on the road ( a roundabout and and intersection) the car seems to stall... or shudder like its going to stall... it stalled for the first time today... which is embarrassing seeing its an auto...
the strange thing is that it used to happen more so on a cold WA morning... single figure temps... but the stall happened today about lunch time and much warmer.
It usually happens at the roundabout about 3km from home.... or.. the lights onto the highway about 3.5km from home... not at the intersection 2.5km from home...
i thought it may have something to do with my torque converter... but it would happen every time i stopped to give way or wait for lights you'd think??
any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated....
my car is a 98 heritage Gen 3 wagon, with 243k on the clock... i Run 98 octane always and only use synthetic oils. (nulon 15w-50 at the moment.... which i dont like but thats another story)
and before anyone says it... 250k service is already in the pipeline! lol
Cheers guys
Jon!

Also its pointless for you to run 98 octane... Your car is tuned from factory to run 91 and you wouldnt benifit anymore than running 95...
All your acheiving extra fuel cost for nothing

Checked your spark plugs? All connections? Vacuum lines?

According to the tests, 98 gets better economy. But that was on the news so who knOws how accurate it is.
When you do your service, make sure you flush some Upper Engine Cleaner through. You might have a sticky Idle control valve.

last service, i had some upper engine cleaner put through... but it is due for some more.
98 does get me more km per tank... its about 80km more per tank... because its a denser fuel ( there are more molecules in the make up i believe) it takes less volume of fuel to make the same bang as 91. i do about 500km a week for work... so i have done my fair share of comprehensive fuel tetsing lol
plus with regular use, it does keep carbon build up in injectors and whatnot to a minimum...
just because it is designed to run 91 or 95 doesnt mean you cant run 98... it basically means dont go UNDER the 91 octane
its too bloody cold over here in winter to have the AC on...
forgot to mention...
spark plugs were done about 4000km ago... good for another 36k i'd hope...
other than the first stall of the day (not every day mind you) it runs fine... and smooth...
its just frustrating lol

Id try cleaning the idle control valve (carby cleaner for mechanical side, contact/airflowmeter cleaner electrical side) and your airflow meter (airflow cleaner/contact cleaner)
At a guess these could seem to give a problem, though it's odd that it's only at a certain spot.

i know my way around pretty well under the bonnet... but never had to even acknowledge the ICV...
where is it located??
and i though ( but most likely will be mistaken, dont gen3's not have AFM??)
It sure is weird... especially as i stop and give way at least once before this happens...
Edit! i dont think the revs fluctuated... i'm braking from 60 to give way at a roundabout or stop at a set of lights...
to be honest i havent really paid attention to it... but i will from now on!

Only ever went to stall under heavy braking, when the revs drop quickly

thats exactly it!!! it didnt do it today when i went out... and as i think about it... it only happens when i brake harder than just easing off the pedal to engine brake...My car used to do this when It was auto, turned out to be a Vacuum leak..
Only ever went to stall under heavy braking, when the revs drop quickly
what sort of money is it to sort out??

Listen around the engine bay for any hissing... = sign of air leak.
Alternatively get a manual and check where the vac lines are, make sure there are no holes in the lines and the tubes are all connected they can come loose over time..
Failing that take it to a shop, they should be able to sort it out cheap.
